You should be a VIP.
Seems to be so commercialized. You get a few good songs mixed in with a stretch of music that you hear over and over and over again peppered with the same commercials. That was how I felt when I first started this station years back. Adding to that was the fact that I was unable to listen to what I wanted to hear at work. The reception was terrible inside the building and the hours I spent at that job was during a time when radio basically went to a infomercial format during the early hours of the morning. Nothing to groove to.
I started lugging CDs to play while at my desk to help pass the time faster. They started piling up.
One night while up late at home I cruised the ‘net and came across an internet radio station from Sweden and they were literally jamming. They were blowing out some of the cuts I would’ve loved to hear at work but have not heard since “back in the day”. But something was missing. Hmmm…
I dug a little deeper and learned how they were able to legally do what they were doing without being sued by the labels and the rights organizations. I decided to start my own station so that I could tune in and listen while at work and no no longer have to lug all those doggone CDs.
I started WBPM NetRADIO in earnest. See, I had played around with doing an internet based radio station years earlier while in NY but was unfamiliar with all of the rules and regulations that went along with doing such a project so it kind of went into a sort of stasis mode.
But at this point after cruising the ‘net I was seeing that with the higher availability of faster internet access starting a station was now feasible yet still kind of pricey. I plunged ahead anyway.
Nearly a decade later here we are. WBPM NetRADIO is heard globally and has been listened to in places I wouldn’t have imagined.
Who would’ve thought that beyond listeners in the U.S. that this station would be picked up in such countries as the UK, Costa Rica, Canada, Japan, Mexico, Germany, Greece, Belgium, Turkey, Nigeria, Portugal, France, Switzerland, Singapore, Brazil, Denmark, Korea, Russia, Spain, The Netherlands, Australia, Isreal, Cyprus, Italy, Taiwan, Argentina, The Phillippines, Ethiopia, Chile, Colombia, Sweden, Venezuela, Serbia, the Czech Republic, Namibia, Qatar, the Dominican Republic, Peru, Poland, Thailand, Iraq, Hungary, Malta, Ireland, Martinique, Egypt and the People’s Republic of China. And, that’s in the past month alone! I was honestly surprised when all those years ago to find someone else listening to a stream I put together so that I could listen at work. (I find it ever interesting how people in countries that “oppose” each other have no problem listening to the same kinds of music. Just something that makes me go “Hmm…”)

But here’s the rub.
In order to be able to stream all of this music and keep getting my paws on more takes people signing up as a VIP listener. Doing so benefits WBPM NetRADIO as well as those who do. When you sign up as a VIP you get to listen to the music without any interruptions. WBPM NetRADIO earns a small (make that damn near tiny) fee for every hour you tune in as a VIP. Remember VIP status means NO COMMERCIALS at all. Just non-stop music that is mixed so that it is a well blended stream of R&B, House music, Jazz, Fusion, Blues, Reggae, Down Tempo grooves and Chilled Beats. One song mixed into the next.
I tried listening to the free stream and I have to admit listening to three or four songs in a row only to hear the some commercial I just heard not too long ago killed me. I know some of them by heart now! I don’t know why many would rather listen to the commercials!
