He started playing the sax at nine, played in his high school Jazz band.
He was a member of the same college football team as NFL Jet Emerson Boozer
A 18, Norfolk, VA native Clarence Clemons recorded with Tyrone Ashley’s Funky Music Machine, a band from Plainfield, New Jersey that included future Funkadelic members Ray Davis, Eddie Hazel and Billy Bass Nelson.
He’s made numerous appearances on television in such shows as “Different Strokes”,”The Simpsons, Damon Wayan’s “My Wife and Kids” and “Brothers” .
He’s appeared in movies including Martin Scorcese’s “New York, New York” and “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure”
Beyond Bruce Springsteen’s E-Street Band, Mr. Clemons had his own band called the Temple of Soul.
His gigs includes working with the brightest stars in the industry including Aretha Franklin, Ringo Starr, the Grateful Dead, Roy Orbison and Jackson Browne.
His influence touched other reedmen including Junior Walker and King Curits.
He recently collaborated with Lady Gaga on the songs “Hair” and “The Edge of Glory”. He also appeared in her “Edge of Glory” video released this past week.
He is an author publishing his memoir “Big Man: Real Life and Tall Tales”
Clarence Clemons suffered a stroke on June 12th. He died last night due complications resulting from that stroke.
His work spanning over five decades reached out from South Jersey and touched the world beyond.
