I know I left someone out… it always happens… know that I thank you too!

There are years of articles and posts within this site. Feel free to check them out. Some topical and some not.

I want to thank all of the artists who took the time out of their busy lives to respond to my attempts to reach out to them. I want to thank in particular Joyce Sims and Chris Jasper for allowing me the opportunity of playing their new releases when they came out. I’m proud that we’ve even had the opportunity to create artwork for their projects too!

I want to thank Shawn, one of the best ears in the business, for helping me track down some of the best music I’ve ever heard. I want to thank Wardell for opening up his world of music to me and then spending time putting together sets so I can share that world with you. Not everyone can hear what you feel. I want to thank Daizee her enthusiasm for the sound. It helped when I needed it most.

I certainly want to thank the thousands of humans across this planet spending tens of thousands of hours checking out the music and the mixes I was able to create with the help of these many artists. I want to thank whomever that is wearing the Official WBPM NetRADIO shirt over in Japan. I’m still amazed that there’ve been times when people of opposing factions, religions and groups were listening to the same music at the same time while others in their groups were blowing each other up. Go figure.

I’ve always felt that if we do not support our musicians then we are willfully allowing ourselves to die a silent death.

Please continue to support those who are in support of you and your sounds.

I will always do the same.

Thanks to all of you who’ve supported what I was trying to do.

So there ya have it… 11 years and some odd months of non-stop music streaming from WBPM NetRADIO. What’s next? Ohhhh… I gots plans. We ain’t finished yet!

Peace,

“DJ Whatshisname?”

Valentines Day

by on Feb.13, 2015, under Station Update, The Music

So, once again its “Valentine’s Day

Ever wonder who was this Valentine dude and was this person really all that “mushy”?

Did a little digging and it seems that the Catholic Church recognizes about three different saints named either Valentinus or Valentine. One line goes that Roman emperor Claudius II decreed single dudes made better soldiers than those with wives (hmmm Spartans had wives…). So, he outlawed marriage for the soldiers. Valentine, a priest, defied the emperor so he was put to death (no sense of humor that dude).

Another line is that Valentine was a priest who helped Christians escape Roman prisons.

Then there is one about Valentine being the first to send a “valentine” to his jailor’s daughter who visited him while he was in the slammer prior to his death.

So this priest reputation as a heroic, sympathetic but mainly romantic type is what really seemed to fire his popularity in the following centuries.

Another idea is that the holiday was created in order to Christianize a pagan holiday named Lupercalia. Originally the Pagan holiday survived the rise of Christiandom only later to be deemed un-Christian.

But enough of the historical possibilities. Ever wonder when all the commercialization began? How about during the 1800s. That’s right we’ve been getting bombarded to give people money to say what we should be able to say in the first place for over 200 years!

It has gone from simple cards to elaborate underwear. And while the commercialization has continued, music has been employed to further push the movement of momentos and gifts.

Interestingly enough it seems musicians, songwriters and others don’t seem to need a special day to create music where love is the main theme. In that groove I present to you a set of songs where you can catch the drift any time of year any time of day. The Valentine set is in the rotation and will be heard during the weekend. It features the likes of Bootsy, Atlantic Starr, Al Green, Zapp, L.T.D., Roy Ayers, Norman Conners, Floetry, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, The Stylistics, The Jones Girls and more singing about a range of heartfelt emotions.

Check out the set.

Stay Sane (and warm “Northerners”), Peace,

DJ

The System is Up & Running!

by on Feb.18, 2013, under Station Update, The Music

FYI Kiddies…

Don't Disturb This Groove (album)

From Mic Murphy

Oh wait… You say you don’t know who this is? Let me jog your memories… Remember Eddie Murphy‘s “Coming To America” & “Beverly Hills Cop”? You heard their music. Remember “You’re In My System”? “Don’t Disturb This Groove?” Coming back now huh? Okay, Jeff Lorber fans, listen to his “Step by Step” album. Guess who’s on there? They’ve lent their talents to the likes of Phil Collins (remember “Sussidio”?), Chaka Khan (“I Feel For You”) and Mtume‘s “Juicy Fruit

That helped? Okay here’s a little bit of news for your ears…

“The 2013 System Album “System Overload” album has finally been released. It’s been many years since “Don’t Disturb The Groove” topped the airwaves and the music charts. Many things have changed but so many things have remained the same. Our passion for music is still the engine that drives our hearts and drives our music. We still endeavor to create music that quickens the pulse and lyrics that tell the story of our time. Yes we still believe in the magic chords and the truth, hell we still write bridges!

“We now have our own very small label “Science Lab Records” created with the sole intent and purpose of releasing the music of the System. Sort of a mental crutch to answer that age old question “what label you guy’s on? “Science Lab” (said with an intense deep reverby and powerful voice). “

Now, all you System fans, tune in and get a peek and go check out their site! (What you waiting for?)

Pssst…. Next, Chris Jasper (Isly Brothers)  has new music out too! (More to come!)

The Recipe… Part 1

by on Mar.14, 2012, under The Other Stuff

Sennheiser HD555 Headphones
Image via Wikipedia

Everyone loves chocolate cake but can’t everyone make one from scratch. Same with listening to music. If you don’t have the right ingredients its not going to sound right at all. So here’s a few things to consider when firing up the sound cannons or just tuning in to WBPM NetRADIO.

Computers are rapidly becoming the platform of choice when listening to music.

Just think, not to far back (for some of you…I know who you are too!!) the only way you could take your music somewhere and hear it was to lug around bulky boom boxes (shoot, some of them were off the hook!!) or crates of records and tapes. I remember barely over decade ago I was tickled at the idea of rollerblading with my portable mini-disc player and not having to carry around a bunch of cassettes (CDs were out of the question).

Since then things have improved totally.

Today you can carry a tiny iPOD stuff with days of sound weighing less than the batteries used in the old cassette Walkmans. They sound a lot better too!

One problem though…today we are faced with a huge choice of headgear and not a lot of information as to which ones are best for our needs. Here’s a little information for those who care to know…

The word used for headphones by Djs and Recording folks and the like is “cans”.

There are basically four types of headphones.

Circumaural are the kind of headphones that completely fit over and around the ears. Check out the ones at the top of the page. These are sometimes called “full sized” headphones. They tend to be the largest and often the heaviest kinds of “cans”. They offer the most isolation from outside or external noise.

Supra-aural headphones sit on the ear. These were the headphones you got when you brought a Walkman back in the day. They don’t do a very good job of blocking external sounds from the listener. But are less expensive that the Circumaural type.

Ear Buds fit into your ear but not into your ear canal. Most personal sound gear comes with these now. The sound quality can vary greatly between manufacturers. When buying replacements compare the specifications on the backs of the packages.

Note: The higher the Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) the better. healthy younger people generally can hear sounds between the range of 20Hz and 20,000Hz (or 20KHz) better than older folks. A person’s hearing gets worse with age.

IEM‘s or In Ear Monitors fit directly into your ear canal. They act like earplugs and headphones at the same time. There are two types universal fit and custom fit. To have a set of customs, a cast would have to be made of your ear canal. See the money burning yet?

There are all manner of engineering designs for headphones resulting in various methods of getting sounds from them into your head. But I want to keep this simple for practical purposes…

Headphones are generally “Dynamic” or “Electrostatic”.

Dynamic headphones work using the same principles are your regular speakers. Magnetic fields are generated to cause the voice coil to move the diaphram pushing air in order to create sound.

Electrostatic headsets have no voice coil. They have a diaphragm suspended between two perforated metal plates. Depending on the charge being applied to the plates at any given moment, the diaphragm is either drawn towards or away from the plates. This causes the diaphragm to move the air through the holes in the metal plates to create sound.

It can take a lot more voltage (like up to one thousand volts!) to make this method work as compared to the voltage needed for dynamic headphones.

So Electrostatic headphones are more likely to be less common and more expensive.

One of the benefits of Electrostatic headphone is that it tends not to have the problems dealing with distortion and higher frequencies that regular dynamic headphones have.

Electrostatic types tend to have much better sound quality. Unless you are mad serious about squeezing every iota of sound into your head at the utmost quality, go with the dynamics and save your beans.

WARNING: Turn them things DOWN! Listening to headphones with the volume turned up will ultimately result in hearing loss. It may be temporary (you’d better hope so) or permanent. So why take a chance.

I have permanent damage in my right ear after using (unknown to me) a faulty headset while in the military. I powered up the receiver and it made a loud cracking noise when and let’s just say things have not been the same since.

“Huh? What’s that?”

Here’s a few tips:

Don’t go for “cute”. Cute don’t stay cute for long if you discover you brought something that sounds like crap.

Consider how long you will be wearing the head gear. Look for comfort.

Consider what you will be doing while wearing the cans.

If your head is going to be moving about – say turning your head quickly – you really have to consider how secure the headgear sits on your head.

A very long time ago, (we are talking near dinosaur times) I was sitting in my basement jamming on some Rufus I was listening to the music through these niiiice Telephonic headphones. I had them cranking and Chaka screaming “Tell Me something goooood!!!” I had them headphones moving around on my head they were so loud.

My father was calling me and didn’t hear a thing. Dude stood right behind me calling my name and I never had a clue. So he walked up behind me and tapped me on the shoulder – scared the crap outta me. I spun my head so fast that I ended up looking into one of the “cans” (the part of the headphone that has the speaker and covers one of your ears) while the headphone remained on my head.

I looked so stoopid my Dad cracked up and said nevermind. But I digress…

Consider what kind of music you will be listening to.

Take into account where you will be using them. Will you be using them some place loud  like say a… Subway? Would it be wise to be ignorant of your surroundings? Or somwhere quiet like maybe an office or library?

Very few things can be as annoying as hearing what you don’t want to hear while trying to listen to your headphones or earbuds. So…if you can, try the listening gear out in the store and compare how much background noise you hear with the volume down low and with it at a comfortable level.

The more you don’t hear, the better the headphones or buds block out the outside sound. Bear in mind that you don’t want them to totally block out the sound. Imagine being told to look out and you don’t hear the warning…nuff said.

If they are wired consider cable length, thickness and the quality of the plug/connector on the end. Nothing irks me more than discovering the wire insulation is breaking away from connector because I know soon the wire itself will break from bending and flexing. Also take a look at where the wires actually connect to the headphone. Say you get up and walk somewhere farther than the cord can reach. Does the cord look like it can take an accidental pull without ripping out of the headphones or away from the plug?

Check and see if there are adapters included with the headphones. Most headphones come with a tiny 1/8″ stereo plug on the end of the cable (see picture above). A lot of gear uses larger jacks for connecting headphones. Look to see if there is an adapter that converts your teeny 1/8″ stereo plug into a 1/4″ standard stereo plug. If not you can usually find them at electronics parts stores (Radio Shack) or you might find them in places like Best Buy. You can also check musical instrument stores Like Sam Ash or Guitar Center which by the way are good places to check out some of the nicer headphones!

Okay I could’ve turned this “novella” into a serial. There are tons of specs one can consider when buyin anything. I’m not into getting absolutely “scientifically ridiculous” about this. That’s why I didn’t get crazy about the specifications. The main point is get what is good for you and the music.

Next time, speakers….

So, about the music playing now…

by on Jul.11, 2011, under Station Update

Dexter Wansel

So, about the music playing now… yeah the heat continues down here… as does the rain…

I like rain – up to a point. And, we are past that! I was standing out in the yard the other day and I could’ve sworn I could see the grass growing! But, I have to admit it looks a lot better green. So as the clouds rolled back in pregnant with mega gallons of wetness poised to plunge down upon my dreads I headed back in. Okay the lightening convinced me to go inside. But I digress…

I put on my “sound cannons” and decided to create a few new sets. I was feeling a bit of nostalgic for the old school groove with a touch of brazilian style drumming mixed in so this week you will hear both! Dr Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band, Powerhouse 3, Domu, Mann Parrish, N.Y.C. Peech Boys (where the heck is my “Life is Something Special 12”?!?!?), Dazz Band, War (check out the remix! It features their cut “Southern Part of Texas”, Me’Shell NdegeOcello, Billy Preston (sw a repeat of Blues Brothers 2000 a while back and he’s been on my head ever since…), Mr. Fingers, The Time, Sister Sledge are all included in the latest set. The mix of Salz’ “Honey Be Good and Jazzanova’s “Glow and Glare is nice if I say so myself! So, I think this set will prove quite interesting for those of you who like to listen to what is happening in the music as you hear it….

And just ’cause I was asked, yes you can catch replay’s of Wa’D’s sets not to forget his Wednesday set at 7:30Pm Eastern US time. His sets includes a number of artists that those with multi-genre tastes will definitely appreciate including Kleeer, Shiela E. Madhouse, Dennis Springer, Marcus Johnson 7 Maysa, Crown Heights Affair, Dexter Wansel, First Light and many more. You should definitely do yourselves a big favor and try to catch those sets!

Other artists that will also be heard if you tune in with a quickness…

Bohannon, Ovasoul 7,Elements of Life, Fredrik Stark, Victor Rosado (very rare version of Johnny Hammond’s cut “Los Conquistadores Chocolate”),Naked Rhythm, Chevel, Bobbi Humphrey, The Blackbyrds, Weekender, Brothers Johnson, The Crusaders, Georges Benson & Duke, Ronnie Laws, Johnny Hammond, Kenny Dope, DJ Tonk, Midnight Express, Mark Farina, Black Magic, Jay  Tripwire, Sheila E., Quant, Lee, Lisa Shaw and many  more….

Now to answer a few questions….

  1. No you won’t find that version of “Skin I’m In” anywhere else. Sorry!
  2. Nope, that Tony Toni Tone remix if “Feels Good” will only be played here.
  3. I dunno why I mixed Parliament’s “Night of the Thumpasaurus Peoples” with the Masters At Work  mix of Rain/Give It Up (A Lil Louis Painting). It just felt right.
  4. Yes that mix of Raze’s “Break For Love” into DJ Languages “Close To You” does seem very visual in an aural sense. Hahaha!! Uhuh! That’s what I saw in my mind’s eye as it played too!
  5. I dunno. Let me know…in the meantime sign up as a VIP and lose the commercial breaks.
  6. No you are not missing anything. The music picks up right where it left off at. The mixes are designed so that VIPs get a nonstop flow. (See the above answer for solution *wink*)
  7. Yes I’m also a musician and I think that is sometimes a blessing and a curse when listening to other mixes or some DJs in certain clubs. (Dudes’ need to stop singing over the mike yanno?)
  8. Well, your mission “Mr. Phelps” is to put an ear on this and see what comes to mind. Then get back at me.

Peace,

DJ

Funk N Jazz…

by on Jun.30, 2011, under Station Update

The Definitive Collection (Cameo album)

Cameo

It’s been hot as you know what down here!

Now the rainy season is kicking in a with a vengeance! Now, after so many weeks without a drop out of the sky, the clouds have been rolling in and opening up. So what’s been up? Here’s what…

New sets have been rolling through the stream non-stop now.

I hope you’ve had a chance to sample some of Wa’ D’s Sets during “The Jazz” breaks on Tuesday nights. Just in case didn’t, portions will play throughout the week so keep your ears peeled. I heard some really great stuff. Nice really nice. Brother definitely feels the flow. You will appreciate his knack for pulling out the good stuff and dropping it just at the right time. Here’s very abbreviated list of some of the artists that he’s been playing:

Spyro Gyra, Bobby Womack, Jeff Lorber, Billy Cobham, Alphonse Mouzon, Rodney Jordan, N-Groove, Henry Johnson, Donald Byrd, Everett Harp, Gemini Soul, Wolfgang Haffner, Lonnie Liston Smith, Ronnie Foster, Lessette Wilson, Paul Taylor and  Hiroshima. Just to name a few!

Later today another set comes online. There’s more but I’m not going to give it all away except to tease you with some music from a number of prolific bands. Mandrill, G.C.S., Funkadelic and The Blackbyrds to name a small few.

Okay, okay you twisted my arm…

At the very top is a never heard before remix of Cameo’s “Skin I’m In” with a twist of J-Boogie dusted on followed by a taste of the GAP Band’s “I don’t Believe You Want To Get Up and Dance“. That’s going to lead into an interesting blend of Janet J’s Nasty (Cool Summer Mix) and Slope’s Funk. There’s more but I’m not saying (too much typin’ man!)

Tune in and listen (A Lot!!) and drop us a line and let us know what you think okay?

Peace,

DJ

G’bye Phoebe Snow…

by on Apr.27, 2011, under The Musings

Phoebe Snow

Phoebe Snow

G’bye Phoebe Snow

Wow…do you realize a generation of music has been whispering past us  the last few years?

Even as a new one steps in to fill in the notes…

Still…

This has been on my mind for the last few days. I woke up at some crazy stoopid hour the other morning. Very,  very much on the A.M. side of the early clock. Tossed and turned for a while – ended up tuning in some movie channel on TV.

On pops Blues Brothers 2000. This is the 1998 sequel to the Blues Brothers movie. Filmed after the passing of John Belushi (Elwood), the story picks up where Dan Akroyd character, Jake, gets out of jail and discovers he has a (sort of) half brother (played by Joe Morton). He’s the son of Jake and Elwood’s late surrogate father (played by Cab Calloway) in the first movie. I’ve never seen this movie so I figured this should knock me back out rather quickly.

Didn’t happen. I caught it near the end were the band (who’s the kid?) was inside of a revival tent doing a number led by James Brown and Sam Moore (half of the famous duo Sam & Dave). They were so good they brought Joe Morton’s character “into the light”.

(Side note: If you’ve never seen Joe Morton in Brother From Another Planet you are deprived. Track it down and see it. Then consider if you could play a lead role in a movie where you never utter a word. Amazing job. Thanks Gene for getting me to check it out…sometimes big brothers are really cool…yanno?)

Right away I thought about how I really missed the “The Godfather of Soul”,  how I remembered that the first time I heard Sam & Dave’s  “Hold On, I’m Coming” was also during my first ride in an Alfa Romeo and how that song will forever be tied to that car in my mind (thanks Big Bro’!).

I didn’t fall back asleep. It seemed like in every other scene some famous musician turned up. Erykah Badu? I had no clue! In the final musical scene, the Blues Brothers Band is competing in a a battle of the Bands against the Louisiana Gator Boys.

The roster of the Gator Boys was like a who’s who in music. led by B.B. King, the band was comprised of . Stars of Country, R&B, Jazz, Blues Rock and more. (Okay its been a few days and I can’t remember all of the names but here’s some of them) Lou Rawls, Koko Taylor, Bo Diddly, Issac Hayes, Paul Schaffer (Letterman Show), Travis Trit, Steve Winwood, Dr. John, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston, Gary U.S. Bonds, Jack DeJonette. The horn section was Joshua Redmond ,Grover Washington Jr.,Clarence Clemons and Jon Faddis. Look up th emovie to get a list of all of the musicians who performed.

What really sticks out in my mind was that while watching all of these artists together it really hit home how many of these great performers are no longer with us. They kinda just left. One here ..then another…little time goes by and then one more we’ve not heard from for a minute gets flashed across news screens.

So naturally I rocked back when I saw the email telling me Phoebe Snow went home.

Now I don’t have not one of Phoebe’s cuts … anymore. Lost the only LP I had of her’s when I left Iceland. One thing though, I can still hear her voice in my mind. It’s like a snippet of a verse from a song she once sang where her voice simply folds over the note of the moment and flies off to the rest of the lyrics. Amazing.

Her’s was a voice that was in that class where Minnie played.

Nooo… one could never be mistaken for the other. They do not sound the same… One was just as pure as the other.. each as rare…just as unique. When you heard Minnie, you knew it. You didn’t have to think about it. You simply knew it from the inside out.

That’s also how Phoebe hits you too. Once you hear her voice, next time there’s no mistaking. It can be gutsy one second and blasting through four octaves the next. Recognition comes subconsciously.

And, you will smile.

Ms. Snow was 60 when she passed yesterday evening. She’d suffered a brain hemorrhage in 2010. It is being reported that it was complications as a result of the hemorrhage that caused her passing.

Phoebe Snow is a Grammy nominated artist who recorded 16 albums, but I suspect many first heard her voice as they watched the Cosby show spin-off “A Different World”. I know Aretha – another “classmate of Minnie and Phoebe –  also sang the theme song. Phoebe was the first. That was her singing the theme song. Ironically, her first live album was recorded in 2007. It turned out to be her last album. And she was in the process of doing more performances.

So as the latest flash in the pan flames about and then out, remember to look to the horizon and check out those who still got that glow. Those who come before shall always be the truest points of reference.

My deepest condolences to all of the families, friends and fans of Phoebe Snow.

Peace,

DJ

The 2011 Listener Survey

by on Apr.25, 2011, under Station Update

Okay folks I’m turning the tables and making a request….

I need you to take 3 or 4 minutes and fill out the listener survey at the bottom of the page.

If you listen I want your opinion.

I know most of you listen for FREE online, especially when you travel or play video games or work from home running your home business from your computer!

The last time a survey was taken, the data indicated that most of you were female between the ages of 25 and 65, listened to WBPM NetRADIO at work and at home in the bed.

Now that you can listen on your smart phone, ipads and in some cases in your cars I want to know what has changed since then. Please fill out the poll and help me get a clue!

It’s pain free, quick and simple and by filing out the survey you will helping me to continue to promote the music we all love!

It would be huge and I (among a number of other folks who may or may not help me really do some great things) would love to know what you think about the station. Fill out this short survey. After 7 years on the air I think some of you 1200+ listeners has an opinion or two so why not share them with me.

Would you like news on various topics, or how to make money online, things about travel or hotel specials,  health and fitness, more Music or general entertainment news? Or..maybe you want news about electronics or photography. How about access to ebooks or articles on how to do minor things to take care of your car? Whatever …it helps to know what people want… I know, I know..there’s a saying “Give the people what they want and they want it all the time..” that’s cool.

What I get out of all of this..

First, the information you provide would help me to make the station even better from a listener’s point of view. I have additional DJs standing by ready to come online and need to know what they need to know to play for you.

Second, this project costs a pretty penny. Not to mention the music costs, there are licensing costs, equipment costs (the next mixer upgrade is already at the $2,000 mark!) and in order to take this station to where I want it to be this site has to make  “moolah” – “ducats” – “dinero” – ” cheese” – “bus fare” – “eggs and bacon” … (scratch that…that was breakfast). So, with the information you provide “I” (or) “We” (but really) “Me” will be able to know which way to flow…

Or it could convince me to hang it up.

So…What do you say?

Huh? What is it? (House Music)

by on Jan.14, 2011, under The Music, The Musings

Huh? What is it? (House Music)

Dennis Ferrer mixing house music

I was talking to a good friend of mine today…

(He’s like a musicologist. Always ready with some info I would’ve never even had a clue about. He’s the “who played with who when before we even heard of them back when they were like 15” kinda deep.)

about music in general and house in particular.

The conversation started of with a hint of how we “lacked an appreciation” for those chipmunk sounding chics coming with noise and having nothing to say yadda-yadda-yadda….

We eventually talked about music from back in the day.

The early days of hip hop music, vocalists like Chaka, Aretha, Luther, Melle Mel and his fellow furious ones, Patryce Banks, the funk and nothing but the funk, bands and on and on. We talked about famous radio people that broke the hottest music like Crocker, O’jay, Byrd, Higginson, Renee and others. We talked about their influence they and what other influences had on House Music. We talked tossed names like Levan and others. We talked about “traditional” R&B music acts that had tried to cross over via disco and our impressions of the results. Some successful and some spectacular flame outs. We even talked about the disappearance of “The Bands”…

English: Photo of the front of 1520 Sedgwick A...

1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Western Bronx. Kool Herc, generally credited as the originator of hip-hop music, lived and threw his first parties in this building. Photo from July 2009. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

I told about how I saw Earth, Wind and Fire disappear off the stage in front of everyone at the concert in such a way that made people put out their joints. We talked about our impressions of the Isleys in concert and of course how many times we experienced P-Funk Live….

Then we got quiet… (Thinking…being introspective…hmmmm)

After a few minutes …

we looked at each other and at the same time asked…

“What happened to all the clubs?!??”

We practically heard crickets in response.

My thoughts drifted to the famous NY clubs from back in “my” day. Nels, The Down Under, The Shelter, Garage and others. Spot sin Brooklyn I’ve passed through and totally enjoyed yet now sadly can’t even remember the names to. We started talking about the artists who would come through and do club dates (too many lip synch‘d but I understand totally).

After few puffs on the minted cigar and Mojito I’d come to enjoy, the question came out…

“So..uhh what is House Music anyway?”

We both cracked up as we fumbled for an explanation. There were so many terms and definitions used to describe, define or confine it. Most have been recited and retold. Just in case, we mumbled through half of them. (Even the infamous..”Music in the house” one.)

After a good laugh and a few sips we just looked at each other I said “#House Music is….”

“…The Shit.” He finished the sentence.

Is That You?

by on Jan.04, 2011, under Station Update, The Music, The Musings, The Other Stuff

Happy new Year and all that …

I was going through the stats for the last month while doing end of year stuff and thought I’d share this and also my thanks to you for making this a truly global experience.

This is a list of cities that have had people visit this site and then listen to the station in the last 30 days. Right now -as of this moment- there are a total of 1,199 people who have set up their players or web browsers to directly listen to the station. Who will be 1200? What the data shows is that usually people hit the site first then click the widget over on the right hand side to listen. Interestingly there is another large group of people who connect directly to the station and then click to visit the site! Cool!! Two way traffic!

By the way.

Get $20 off! Become a V.I.P. (click the link)

Or get a FREE 5 Day Trial –>

What do you get? As a VIP you get to hear WBPM NetRADIO as it should be heard. That is without ANY interruptions. Just non-stop music. Imagine what the station sounds like without breaks. Ask a VIP who listens and see what they say. Oh much as I hate to admit it…you also get to tune into literally thousands of other commercial free stations as well. But I suspect that you may wander but you will always come back. Why because NO ONE else is streaming quite like this.

The first person who becomes  1200th person to save WBPM NetRADIO as a preset and becomes a VIP by clicking the banner below gets to pick something valued up to $25 from the WBPM Store.

I had a conversation recently with someone who claims I have a nice radio voice and wanted to know why no live shows recently. In short, I’m looking for the right equipment. One of my mixers died and it was absolutely perfect for doing live shows. The remaining ones are more an exercise in frustration more than anything else and I don’t think you want to hear me cussin’ in the background HAHAHA!!!

What does all these listeners mean to me? Well…hmmm….It means that maybe I am on the right track (?); Music is truly a universal language (?); Good Beats move feets (?). Maybe it means that we might have a lot more in common than some might want us to believe. I suspect that it might be a good thing that I keep my mouth shut and let the music pass the word instead. That make sense?

So, what does the coming year bring? I have not the slightest idea. Maybe people will start buying that WBPM NetRADIO gear I have on sale. That would keep the station on the air

Beatport Pool Party at the Winter Music Confer...
Image via Wikipedia

for another year. Or, maybe some hurting terrestrial radio station will discover what I am doing and PAY ME to come and play  program director helping them to dominate their market (yeahhh riiiiiiiiiiiiight!!).

Would be cool to get on Sirius. Anyone know anyone? I’d yap it up for that!!

It was pointed out that if each one of those 1,199 kind folks signed up as a VIP we could go live 24/7, upgrade the gear in here, do much more on the site with artists, upgrade the gear in here, and possibly stream video from special events at locations like New York and Miami (Did I mention upgrade the gear in here?). That would be cool since the Winter Music Conference is coming in about two months. Imagine getting live feeds from the events down there during that week (See photo at right heheheh!). (Looking around for a hat to pass right now!) Well, whatever happens in 2011 I wish us ALL the best and less headaches….

Hope that sanity and good vibes have thus far reigned over your parades…

Check this out…

I found a resource for you and the stereophiles in your worlds that might do a better job than I at explaining all this technogadetry.

I had started out a few posts ago going over some of the definitions of music related tech. Got bogged down with a lot of projects (gotta make them beans yanno?). So, when this came to me it was like YEAH!!!

Take a look at this site and let me know what you think!

No. Really…let me know people.

The Latest Set Starts Streaming Today!

This latest set turned out interesting.

Once again, I didn’t plan what I would play. Actually I woke up in the middle of the night and couldn’t get back to sleep. So I started messing around. Next thing I know its daylight and I have over five hours of music blended. I listened to the mixes.

I have to say I think I need to wake up in the middle of the night more often! Somehow I get the feeling that the groove of the entire set expresses where I’d rather be versus where I am. It’s more of a driving beat kind of thing with some interesting interludes.

About an hour and a half in you’ll hit Marques Wyatt’s “For Those Who Like To Get Down“. I think you’ll find the blend that flows  into “Love & Happiness” (River Ocean feat. India) and then into Sumo’s “Santiago Boys” off of the Bargrooves Cosmopolitan compilation very interesting. Keep an ear on the keyboards is all I’m saying. There are other triple mixes in the set too.

You will also hear Brother Jack McDuff and cuts by Angelique Kidjo, Miguel Migs, Cameo, US Collective, Jon Cutler, Limelife, Kim English, Jay Tripwire, Kludo, Angela Johnson, George Kranz (Din Daa Daa…remember that?), Ethnic Heritage Ensemble, Ike “Black Liquid” Ngwaba, Fredrik Stark, Lisa Shaw, Kenny Dope and Chuck Diesel to name just a few.

Now I suspect a few of you might not know who some of these artists are. That’s cool. I didn’t either until I listened.

Stay You & Enjoy the Music! Gotta go!

How I Feel…

Sometimes we listen to certain songs because we want to hear things that reflect how we’re doing at the moment.

This set is not that. It’s about going back and forward. It’s been coming for a minute. I’m going back. “To Mah Roots” so to speak. I heard a song on the radio and thought about how I really liked it and then wondered why I have not played it and others in quite a while.  The playlist is about where I am at and where I am going in these times. No great philisophical statement here. Just what I am hearing in my head and seeing with my eyes. A very eclectic set. Very rhythmic. Weather Report, Marvin Gaye, Funkdadelic, J-Boogie, Funk, Rap, Jazz, Ballads all kinds of music is packed into this set. Some lyrics may apply but don’t assume the obvious. You will hear music from across genres maybe you will wonder how come your local stations don’t play these kinds of songs more often if at all too!  Simple as that.

Enjoy.

Hi peeps!

Greeting ect., ect., just a quick note…

Added two new sets…
Playing now on the station.
Stuff like Knee Deep, a cut by Man Parrish, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5, A version of Janet jackson’s “Nasty” that rarely if ever gets airplay, “Son of Reach For It” (How many of you “vintage appreciators” remember that cut) and many others.
That set is over 4 hrs long.

Also added a 6hr set of … well you’ll just have to listen to find out!
(trust me..its a good one!!)

That’s 10hrs of non-stop music for those of you have have signed up as VIP Members of the station.
Don’t forget to check out the links at the bottom of the page. Something REAL TASTY for you coffee lovers awaits you.

I know there are a number of you who follow “current events”. Seems sometimes like all hell is breaking loose. Makes me wanna both holla and chill.  All I can say is… “Don’t let ’em change you” (that’s one of the oldies playing too!!)

Remember … this tech is supposed to foster interaction so DROP ME A NOTE! LET ME KNOW WHAT’S UP ON YOUR END!

Peace,

DJ

The Saturday Night Set

by on Apr.04, 2010, under The Music

I’ve been meaning to do this for ages….

I just hated all the typing involved..okay I can be lazy…I have to admit, I suck at typin’ so this typing up a list of (have to be over) 100 songs is an act of pure dedication to the cause….

(Feelin sympathetic yet?)

Here’s a partial listing of the set that is playing now … The entire set is 14hrs of non-stop mixe. What’s the big fuss about the songs? pay attention to what happens between them. That is my favorite part. that other place in time that passes while one song ends and the next begins.  This is where I do most of my work. I specialize in transitions to some degree. I look to make the songs – no matter how disparate- sound as if they belong together. As though they were recorded to be played in that order … Listen for a while..you will, I suspect, note the eclectic nature of the set? No?
