I know I left someone out… it always happens… know that I thank you too!

There are years of articles and posts within this site. Feel free to check them out. Some topical and some not.

I want to thank all of the artists who took the time out of their busy lives to respond to my attempts to reach out to them. I want to thank in particular Joyce Sims and Chris Jasper for allowing me the opportunity of playing their new releases when they came out. I’m proud that we’ve even had the opportunity to create artwork for their projects too!

I want to thank Shawn, one of the best ears in the business, for helping me track down some of the best music I’ve ever heard. I want to thank Wardell for opening up his world of music to me and then spending time putting together sets so I can share that world with you. Not everyone can hear what you feel. I want to thank Daizee her enthusiasm for the sound. It helped when I needed it most.

I certainly want to thank the thousands of humans across this planet spending tens of thousands of hours checking out the music and the mixes I was able to create with the help of these many artists. I want to thank whomever that is wearing the Official WBPM NetRADIO shirt over in Japan. I’m still amazed that there’ve been times when people of opposing factions, religions and groups were listening to the same music at the same time while others in their groups were blowing each other up. Go figure.

I’ve always felt that if we do not support our musicians then we are willfully allowing ourselves to die a silent death.

Please continue to support those who are in support of you and your sounds.

I will always do the same.

Thanks to all of you who’ve supported what I was trying to do.

So there ya have it… 11 years and some odd months of non-stop music streaming from WBPM NetRADIO. What’s next? Ohhhh… I gots plans. We ain’t finished yet!

Peace,

I’m thinking about ending it…

DJ-n-Turntables

The station that is…

(don’t panic)

After 11 years with all of the costs and time involved …

I’m really debating whether or not I should continue this internet station…

It’s been one hell of a blast DJ’ing the live sets and programming the shows…

WBPM NetRADIO has allowed me the opportunity to work with and communicate with some amazing humans from across the planet. I’m blessed to have met some who’ve opened my eyes and ears to new worlds. I truly and deeply thank you. Maybe one day Mars…

It’s just that now with things as they are…

I need more time to focus…

So in the mean time while I make up my mind…

I will present some of my favorite sets from the past…

Who knows… maybe even mix up one last one for the road….

IF it comes to that.

If You Could…

by on Jun.02, 2014, under The Musings

www.wbpmnetradio.com

Internet radio music lovers, if you could control the “Wayback Machine”, who’s music would you bring back?

Minnie? Luther? James? Vesta? Who?

I got to thinking about that as I was hunting down new music for upcoming sets. I started thinking back to what got me listening to certain artists even at the young age that I did.

Did the lyrics make sense? Did I really understand what they were talking about on those songs? I’ll admit it, many times..No!!!

More often than not, the beat snatched me by the ‘fro and shook me loose only when done. It seems sometimes that today after years of using my ears, more often than not something seems missing. I’m sure part of that feeling is fueled by a sense of nostalgia. I do miss the tight arrangements of a full blown Cameo or Ohio Players.

I definitely miss the wordsmithing that went on in a number of George Duke‘s cuts. I miss the urgency of Max Roach’s “Right Now”, Eric B & Rakim, Odetta, Grand Master Flash & The Furious 5, The KayGees, Jackie Wilson, Charlie Mingus (shoot, “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat” still stops me in my tracks…). Curtis Mayfield‘s writing is some of the best ever heard. Marley, Coletrane and Miles all too good to be true but were.

Blakey, Blige & Berry too. Let me stop because I could go on and on. I think you get the drift.

Even some of the so called “mechanical” beats of the 1980s pops into my thoughts from time to time. Now, that is never to say that today’s musical landscape is barren and nothing more than a wasteland. Far from it. I hear some good stuff out there and try as often as one can to get my grubby fingers on those tracks. Still, there are times when I scan the airwaves just to see what corporate minds are trying to dump into ours and I hear nothing.

Used to be you got it off the air because that was where it was. Now, after all of the mergers and buyouts involving local stations this past decade or so, things have become, well, bland. I remember a time when I looked forward to road trips down south from New York because it meant that I would get to hear what everyone down the East Coast was getting to hear.

I also learned over time that what plays in Georgia may not necessarily make it “up North”. So, there’s a lot of music Northerners missed out on too.

Recent past drives “up North” found me lugging stacks of DVDs to listen to in the car.

I remember learning how in the past, stations were concerned about listener “satisfaction”. It would seem that now you get what you get. Less variety and more B.S. They know if they play something enough times – literally beat a song into your brain – they can influence your tastes. They do that instead of presenting something for your consumption and letting you decide if you like it or not.

As a result fewer people have a clue what their musical heritage really is. If people know more about the recording careers of an Aretha or a Johnnie Taylor, I believe there would even be the possibility of less strife between people. If you have NetFlix, check out some of the music documentaries streamed there. There’s quite a few. I recently checked out one about Muscle Shoals. Very interesting. shed light on a lot of things I suspected.

So I’m wondering today. If you had control of a Wayback Machine’s joy sticks, what would you do with them. Would variety play a factor? I know what I would do.

P.S.: We have another dedication coming this week at noon. Those in the know who it is dedicated to and why. Again this week’s cut is dedicated to those who’ve managed to get you thoroughly ticked off. Made you wanna holla not so nice things at the top of your lungs. Scream at the fool in the left lane tying up traffic or cutting people off or tapping on their brakes for no reason or driving with their lips loving a cell phone. It’s short and too the point. But it gets the message across. This Friday 12 Noon. Remember tender eardums may need to turn it down or wait until 12:10! This cut may not be suitable for all environments!

So…

by on May.28, 2014, under The Music

So…

Spring has sprung and summer is knocking on our doors…

The summer mix set is coming. Working hard on it.

Those of us who love spoken words lost a voice this morning.

Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou passed on today as she continues her journey.

May we all listen to the message of her words and learn from her experiences.

Here’s an example of what I mean. Something that made me go “Hmmmm…” when it bounced against my skull…(Read the pic!)

Maya Angelou If you are always trying to be no...

That’s what I’m talking about.

Been really busy lately. Looking for more VIP listeners to help support this station (cost of music is crazy man!!!)

There are nearly 1500 of you out there that have saved this station as a preset. So, I’m wondering if you really dig the commercials.

I’ve been listening as a non-VIP and I have to say, I hate how they get dropped in on the music. (I have no control over how and when the commercials get dropped in but would if more people would go VIP). How can you listen to the same commercial back to back over and over again? Amazes me. But anyway, I’ll just monitor the VIP stream and hope you enjoy the commercials. I know I can’t deal with them — breaks the groove up yanno?

BTW: Was watching the TV the other day and saw “Mr. Bloviated” himself (Rush Limbaugh or “Jabba the Rush” as I call him) spew in a video clip disrespecting the First Lady, Michelle Obama (frankly I’m sure she doesn’t pay him any mind). She was doing her part to raise awareness about the girls who were recently kidnapped in Nigeria. Immediately one song came to mind soon as he opened his “orifice”.

I will play it at the top of the Friday Mix at Noon eastern time. If you have tender ears or are listening in a place where saltier language is not appreciated, you might want to either turn down the volume for a few minutes or wear headphones. Also you might want to try to contain yourself. Try not to bust out laughing too loud okay? Remember This Friday at Noon Eastern!

Actually if there is anyone on your planet you mentally flip the bird to, This is the song you should dedicate to them.

Peace,

DJ

Sign up and listen as a VIP!!

10 years Later! A Decade of Streaming Music on Internet Radio

by on Apr.03, 2014, under The Music, The Musings, The Other Stuff

frankie knuckles way

Frankie Knuckles Way (Photo credit: Like A Final Boss)

Wow.. its been an entire decade streaming music via the internet…amazing…

First off I would like to pass along my deepest condolences to the Family, Friends and Fans of Mr. Francis Nicholls

Known to the most of us as Frankie Knuckles one of the originators of a music that permeates what we hear to this day. His accomplishments are legend and he is respected throughout the music industry working with some of the brightest stars in the Galaxy of music. (See the video the real story of house music here.)

I would be remiss to also celebrate the life and times of Ms. Joyce Beachum.

Most of you don’t know her like you are familiar with Mr. Knuckles but to those who do, she’s right up there with those you know as one of the most positive caring humans to have ever walked this planet. So, much respect sister. I miss you.

All this comes wrapped up in the realization that WBPM NetRADIO is celebrating a decade of streaming music to the planet. It started with me getting tired of lugging a stack of CDs to work and ended up as this. Along the way I have been in contact with some amazing people and have been encouraged by people like Joyce while inspired by the likes of Frankie (Knuckles and Crocker to name a few).

I want to thank all of the indie artists who decided to allow me the honor of presenting their music. I want to thank those like Joyce Sims, Mic Murphy (The System) and Chris Jasper for especially reaching out to me and allowing me the opportunity to pass the goodness to you.

Imagine the shock of realizing that the stream set up to allow me to listen to what I wanted to hear at work was being listened to by someone somewhere else! Dag, now I have to do it “right”! Or, the day I received an email stating that the station was Voted the Best in R&B & Jazz about a year after it went live and also topping the Garage Music genre @ Live365.com last year! The nerves that frayed when a live show went dead because my feed to the internet temporarily failed..that was fugly. The joy when someone in Japan brought an official WBPM NetRADIO T-Shirt or seeing that there were people on the planet listening in places where I didn’t even realize they had internent access! Like island out in the middle of the Indian Ocean.

We talked about Jazz and Funk and Hip Hop and of course House and some of its “sonic temples“. We talked about R&B and the stars of Soul. We talked about how its all connected and gave examples.

Here you saw responses to world events from NY to Arizona the other side of the world. Even here in the “Sunshine State” (Let me go on record now: SCOTT HAS GOT TO GO. There I did it again.)  Had some small fun with a wannabe  and  You’ve even been warned…

Seems like this site has almost become a chronicle of sorts as well, honoring those who’ve gone on the next stage in their journey. Never forget the George Dukes (see his last video), Vesta Williams, the Nick Ashfords (video) , Clarence Clemmons‘, Phoebe Snows ,  Gary Shider and of course the Whitneys of our worlds (to name a few). They are legion and their contributions to simply existing made the process that more bearable…

So, enough of that, I could go on and on and on…

In celebration there will be new mix sets streaming all this month featuring the cuts that have played and you’ve voted for as your favorites.  Starting this afternoon (like about now!), you’ll hear cuts from the 70’s, 80’s, 90s right up to the latest cuts released these past few days.

Here’s a clue as to the diversity of artists that have been heard on this stream

Here’s another clue with pictures!

So, as this is also an invite, click the player on the right hand side of the page and see what you’ve been missing if you’ve never tuned in before and cruise the site to see what’s been bubbling through here too!

If you have listened but have not been here since a live broadcast, you too should stick an ear in!

And to those of you who’ve listened all along I say thanks so much for making this worth the while!

Peace,

DJ

The World is A Ghetto

by on Mar.20, 2014, under Station Update, The Musings

The World Is A Ghetto ~

Or so it would seem with all of the drama going on all over the place lately…

English: Vladimir Putin at school age

Young VladimirL Some kids grow up to do the craziest things…

Disappearing planes, Putin putting the moves on the Ukraine (w0nder what he was like as a kid huh?). Politicians demonizing those less fortunate. Crazy. (Why is The Temptations’ “Ball of Confusion playing in the back of my mind?)

So, in order to get the rest of us in the mood to do something positive for those around us, I’m going to release this set on you a few weeks early.

What say you? Early you ask? Yes. Early.

I was saving it to be used as part of WBPM NEtRADIO’s upcoming celebration of a decade streaming music to ears in over 40 countries.

Streaming to people (I might add) that seem intent on shooting each other over something we all share (Hint: its something round and real pretty when seen from space. Another hint: It’s the only one we got.)

So tune in tomorrow from 12Noon Eastern on and check out some of the new goodness I have put together for you. I think that it will be uplifting as well as grounding and maybe even provide some foods for thoughts.

Not gonna bore you with the names of the artists who will be heard during the 5 hour long mix set. But, I will tell you that this particular set is best heard as a VIP (Those commercials are a royal pain and I know it).

That’s right, listen as a VIP (there’s a free trial I read recently). Which brings me to another idea my head bubbled up. I’m considering going all VIP starting next month.

That means if you try to tune in and you have not signed up as a VIP member you will not be able to hear what else I got planned… just sayin’.

What do you think about that?

Would you be willing to listen as a VIP if it meant no commercial interruptions and guaranteed that WBPM NetRADIO would be around for another decade?  Let me know… visit the stream by clicking on the player on the right hand side of the page and click the link to send DJ a message.

I’d appreciate hearing back from you… yeah you I see you out there… acting all shy and sneaky and whatnot…

Get involved …

Peace,

DJ

Okay okay…the set contains some brand new cuts from some new and not so new people and its ALL good.

Music Radio…

by on Aug.01, 2013, under Station Update

Music Radio…

VIP

You should be a VIP.

Seems to be so commercialized. You get a few good songs mixed in with a stretch of music that you hear over and over and over again peppered with the same commercials. That was how I felt when I first started this station years back. Adding to that was the fact that I was unable to listen to what I wanted to hear at work. The reception was terrible inside the building and the hours I spent at that job was during a time when radio basically went to a infomercial format during the early hours of the morning. Nothing to groove to.

I started lugging CDs to play while at my desk to help pass the time faster. They started piling up.

One night while up late at home I cruised the ‘net and came across an internet radio station from Sweden and they were literally jamming. They were blowing out some of the cuts I would’ve loved to hear at work but have not heard since “back in the day”. But something was missing. Hmmm…

I dug a little deeper and learned how they were able to legally do what they were doing without being sued by the labels and the rights organizations. I decided to start my own station so that I could tune in and listen while at work and no no longer have to lug all those doggone CDs.

I started WBPM NetRADIO in earnest. See, I had played around with doing an internet based radio station years earlier while in NY but was unfamiliar with all of the rules and regulations that went along with doing such a project so it kind of went into a sort of stasis mode.

But at this point after cruising the ‘net I was seeing that with the higher availability of faster internet access starting a station was now feasible yet still kind of pricey. I plunged ahead anyway.

Nearly a decade later here we are. WBPM NetRADIO is heard globally and has been listened to in places I wouldn’t have imagined.

Who would’ve thought that beyond listeners in the U.S. that this station would be picked up in such countries as the UK, Costa Rica, Canada, Japan, Mexico, Germany, Greece, Belgium, Turkey, Nigeria, Portugal, France, Switzerland, Singapore, Brazil, Denmark, Korea, Russia, Spain, The Netherlands, Australia, Isreal, Cyprus, Italy, Taiwan, Argentina, The Phillippines, Ethiopia, Chile, Colombia, Sweden, Venezuela, Serbia, the Czech Republic, Namibia, Qatar, the Dominican Republic, Peru, Poland, Thailand, Iraq, Hungary, Malta, Ireland, Martinique, Egypt and the People’s Republic of China. And, that’s in the past month alone! I was honestly surprised when all those years ago to find someone else listening to a stream I put together so that I could listen at work. (I find it ever interesting how people in countries that “oppose” each other have no problem listening to the same kinds of music. Just something that makes me go “Hmm…”)

Thank you.

This month (assuming no further catastrophic equipment flameouts) you will hear the works of some new independent artists and artists you may be familiar with. Including in the latest play lists are Red X, Quentin Harris, DJ SPen, Maurice Joshua, Lem Springsteen, Black Coffee, Roy Ayers, Joey Negro,Sunkids, Charice, Mimistry of Funk, Jacob London, Martin Venetjoki, Kerri Chandler, DJ Dove, Joyce Sims (new cut coming out and it is TIGHT!), Laura Vane, Ken ECB, Jon Cutler, Chris Carrier, Funk La Planet All Stars, Dennis Ferrer, Lil Louis, Teena Marie, Only Freak, DJ Mike Cruz,Byron Stinglily, Jay Tripwire, Erykah Badu, Unforscene, J. Boogie, Bassnectar, King Kooba, Uman, Platinum Pied Pipers, Stevie Wonder, Pleasure, Mark Farina, Jocelyn Brown, Rebirth, Loose Ends, Jazzanova, Parliament, Lisa Shaw, Inner City, Kings of Tomorrow, Capitol A, Mercury, Praxis, Black Box, Raze, Elements of Life, Nuyorican Soul, Delano Smith, Roland Clark, Marxman, Steel Pulse, Eva Be, Groove Theory, Praful, Jill Scott, Maxwell, Mad Lion, Barry White, Soul II Soul, Howard Johnson, War, Marques Wyatt, Miguel Migs, David Bowie, Martin Luther, Grace Jones, Nice & Smooth, East Side Movement, Andy Caldwell and dozens of other artists from a wide variety of genres.

But here’s the rub.

In order to be able to stream all of this music and keep getting my paws on more takes people signing up as a VIP listener. Doing so benefits WBPM NetRADIO as well as those who do. When you sign up as a VIP you get to listen to the music without any interruptions. WBPM NetRADIO earns a small (make that damn near tiny) fee for every hour you tune in as a VIP. Remember VIP status means NO COMMERCIALS at all. Just non-stop music that is mixed so that it is a well blended stream of R&B, House music, Jazz, Fusion, Blues, Reggae, Down Tempo grooves and Chilled Beats. One song mixed into the next.

I tried listening to the free stream and I have to admit listening to three or four songs in a row only to hear the some commercial I just heard not too long ago killed me. I know some of them by heart now! I don’t know why many would rather listen to the commercials!

Try the VIP trial and let me know if you agree that this station sounds totally different and entirely better commercial free.

Stay sane (’cause it is nuts out there lately)

Peace,

DJ

WBPM NetRADIO tops Garage Music Genre listings

(So nice had to type it twice)

June has been an big month numbers wise.

Never really was much of a numbers kind of dude. But the other day I noticed something that caught my eye on the page that shows numbers of hours people listen to the station. The ranking position was changing. Changing in a big way.

Starting the month of June WBPM NetRADIO ranked overall at 1400+ out of 7,000 stations

Live365 logo

What did we do? Kill some chickens? Nooooo!!!!!

Just what has been done for the last 9 years. Presenting the best sounding mixed sets using the widest variety of music we could put our ears on.

So because I am a glutton for punishment… I’m bringing out some new sets almost daily. Tune in and see why we are climbing up the ratings.

Cuts in the Key of “A”

Cuts in the Key of “A”

I-Luv-House-Music

That’s what’s happening this week.

Let’s see if you can tell. It will not be easy! You have a set that includes Jazz music, some old school Hip Hop, House music, Slow Jams and more all in the Key of A (major, minor…). Even thought they are of different genres and contain different messages its all about the same key. Different grooves, different moods but all good. So good in fact, you’re just going to have to tune in. Note I did not mention who was part of the set. That’s all I’m saying for now!

Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing

by on Oct.20, 2012, under The Musings

When you hear “Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing”

you know what that implies right?

Peek a Boo...

Peek a Boo…

So how come so many young artists fall for the game where someone claims to be a “manager” only to turn out to be about exploiting the individual seeking to make their way into the music business?

And, why do those naive individuals fail to listen to those who’d try to warn them to be aware of the pitfalls of listening to only the good things people say about their performances?

You know the story. It’s been played out over and over in movies about young starry eyed music star wannabees time and time again.

In case you missed the flicks it goes something like this. A young one discovers they have a great voice (or a not so great voice) and they ignore the advice to not put all their eggs in one basket or better yet take the time to learn more about their craft and the business.

Instead our young one listens to the platitudes offered up by some  wolf in sheep’s clothing, seeking to make a lot of dimes off of the young one’s talents while never really offering anything to help the person along. Happens everyday.

Kids, remember this. It’s great you can create great beats. But, realize so can a million others just like you. If you wanted to be a pilot would you not need to learn to fly first?

What makes you think that because your beats are banging that your beats will be loved worldwide automatically?

Do your homework.

Learn all you can about The BUSINESS.

Doing so will serve you greatly when all is said and done. You may also find yourself with less parasites attached to your life.

Listen to this station and hear what other artists (who are a bit further along their paths) have been able to achieve. It might help you get an idea of how far along your path you’ve gone.

Better yet, I hope what you hear inspires you to keep on doing what you love to do.

To all of you soon to be superstars, check out Kashif’s “All You Better Know About The Music Business”. Search for it online. It’s been out a while but is still pertinent to today’s business of Music.

It will help you to see that a wolf in sheep’s clothing is nothing more than a naked pup.

Just a thought.

Peace,

DJ

P.S.: VOTE fool! Your LIFE does depend on it.

P.P.S: Oh yeah… yet another brand new set is streaming. Put an ear on it. It’s good.

WBPM NetRADIO features Your Favorite R&B Music Hits

by on Aug.08, 2012, under Station Update, The Musings

WBPM NetRADIO features Your Favorite R&B Music Hits

Hear Classic R&B on WBPM NetRADIO

BT Express was heard on R&B radio constantly.

R&B Music Hits refers to more than just the great songs of The Godfather of Soul or Gladys Knight & The Pips…

The latest sets on WBPM NetRADIO provides examples of other classic R&B artists who have produced massive hits. For those of you who are fans of Side Effect, after literally years of hunting, I had added “Take A Chance” to the stream. This is a classic dance cut from back in the day. Has that driving bass line with a serious rhythm guitar track in addition to the stellar vocals.

The set is a tad more eclectic than usual. You will get a sampling of some classic guitar cuts including Funkadelic doing a live version of Maggot Brain featuring the originator Eddie Hazel and Micheal Hampton playing it together. Listen carefully to see how they did it.

Also Living Colour makes a first appearance here with a favorite of mine “Type”. Never heard of Living Colour? Do a search on YouTube.

Speaking of  “The Tube”, do a search for Maggot Brain, Eddie Hazel and check out the clip where they perform in Germany in 1985. That’s all I’m saying.

BT Express also comes through with a classic house party cut “I like It” in addition to Billy Ocean‘s “One of Those Nights”.

So… in ending I just want to wish everying some peace and sanity…because we could all use some!

Later!

Just wanted to go to the movies…

by on Jul.24, 2012, under The Musings

“We just wanted to go to the movies!!”

Police Car Lights

Is what the lady said as the news hounds interviewed her and the other survivors of that midnight madness at the movie theater over in Aurora. Surely someone will be asking at some point “What were you doing when…”. I know what I was doing….

Sitting up in the middle of the night thinking random thoughts about the life and times (for starters…)

Maggot Brain had come on and the tv was tuned to some news channel with the sound muted. My eyes kept getting drawn the blue and red flashing lights on the screen. My brain was not processing what they were sending though. My ears had preempted all programming as Funkadelic’s “Maggot Brain” faded in building in volume.

The version I was listening to was not the familiar one most people have heard. This was a 14 minute version from another album where they played it live. (Funkadelic Live Meadowbrook, Rochester, Michigan 12th September 1971). Not a bad sounding recording my ears were saying – but my eyes kept cutting in…

At some point I I turned on the closed captioning on the TV to discover hell had revisited earth yet again…and the music played building to a crescendo of guitars as I read the news…

Wildly estimated body counts started coming in as the drummer got some…

Somehow the music added the perfect context to the event. Hard to explain. and I was thinking to myself, they only wanted to see a movie…crazy. And the music fit perfectly. Check this out…

Willard really? In a movie theater?

WBPM NetRADIO Update…

by on Apr.26, 2012, under Station Update

Alternative version of image:Wooden hourglass ...

(Yeah…yeah I know…been crazy busy) Here’s a WBPM NetRADIO update:

I’ve been looking at the demographic data for the station. Very interesting. And Ironic. WBPM NetRADIO has had people who are portrayed in the news as mortal blood enemies listening to the same music on here at the same time. Go figure.

So I have to ask:

If you all can agree on the beats why can’t you folks agree not to beat shoot, stab and basically blow each other the f*ck up? Just sayin’. Don’t get mad at me if you realize you’ve been played.

And to all you beautifully talented artists out there who’ve sent music or questions about/for submissions…

If you have music to submit please please please look up at the top of the page to get info on how to submit your music. It really is important. I have one buckethead (not the group) send me a file that was infected. Nope not doing that no more. Send the CD with theMP3 or WAVE on board and some kinda bio information.

Oh, and here’s a little experiment…

If you go to the beach. Walk out on the sand and look closely if you see little specks of color, look closely and see if it is plastic or not. Then do me a favor and let me know where you spotted it at. Heard something real interesting on the radio earlier about pollution and plastic. Dude says its on every beach everywhere. I’m curious. So, humor me okay?

Okay now to the really important stuff:

This week features a set that starts off kinda relaxed then at some point (I ain’t warning ya) takes it up a few notches. It will be playing Friday and over the Weekend at various times so check the schedule. I want to see what happens (it’s about that demographic thing I mentioned earlier). The set has a variety of cuts. Genres include Reggae, House Music, R&B, Jazz, Chill Grooves, World Beat and a few surprises. A more “mature” set? Depends on how well you listen.

Been thinking about this a lot lately. End of this month the license for the station needs to be renewed. Debating going VIP only (yeah..the demographic business again), It would help to cover the cost of the music etc. But I note that there are a few of you who listen non-stop for hours each day (even through those horrid commercials – I dunno how you stand it) who are not VIPs and I’m wondering if you realize that you are really missing the real flow of the sets because of the previously mentioned commercial interruptions. I’m still juggling this mess around in my big head so if you have a thought ..now would be nice to let it be known.

Stay sane, I have to go make some money.

Peace,

DJ

Shouldn’t have to wear a Hoodie to make a point…

by on Mar.26, 2012, under The Musings

That’s some of what I thought as I considered the Trayvon

Martin case…

My new Hoodie

as I heard of all the folks wearing a Hoodie to rep Solidarity. Here in the land of the assumed to be “free”-  the home of the not so”brave”. Obviously we are not as free as too many would like to assume and there too many who think its brave to go around taking out women and kids. And it’s not just Sanford or Syria either…and please forgive me for digressing but can someone please answer this…how is it a country can get all outraged over the doings of a mad or crazy man but yet accept the disfiguring of girls who simply want to go to school? Just asking…I mean I would think they would stay pissed…A lot of this indignation I’m seeing around me is hitting me a less than genuine … these things we have been seeing has been happening for a minute so why the outcry now? Where was the fuss way back when…and mathematically speaking…how many isolated incidents make a pattern?

Okay I’m not going to rehash all that you’ve already heard except to add…

If you have to go to the store (for example), remain vigilant. Ask Amadou’s mom about that…

Spring has sprung and its breaking loose all over the place…

Rest in Peace Trayvon and my deepest to the family.

It’s a damn shame we can’t even get skittles without some crap jumping off. That goes for a Three Muskateers bar too..Right Queen, NY?

And what the hell is going on in San Diego? Some schizoparanoidignorantass murdered an Iraqi woman and left a note calling her a “terrorist”? WTF man?!? Really? People need to watch what they say because as Gabby’s experience has shown, there are those who have less than shit for brains running around loose.

Makes me wanna holla…

And I can relate to the scenario (on foot and behind the wheel)…

The only refuge sometimes is music and I’ve been digging through a lot lately.

Take a listen and see what I put together to soothe your moods the right way…

The latest set features a 10 minute House’d version of Parliament/Funkadelc doing “Mothership Connection” titled “Mothership Reconnection” and it is very, very tasty. Also you will notice a similar the bass line sounding like Chic’s “I Want Your Love” on another track (“Selected Works” by Uncle Sam) with nice ivory work mixed in… And yet another version of MFSB’s “Love Is The Message” A very smooth Kim English cut (“I Know A Place”), Terisa Griffin’s “Yes”,  Sick feat. K8 doing “What A Gig” and a number of other new cuts I’ve been able to track down…

So be aware, keep dealing and don’t let them change your tune.

Peace (to Syria, Sudan, San Diego and of course Sanford FL)

DJ

The Recipe… Part 1

by on Mar.14, 2012, under The Other Stuff

Sennheiser HD555 Headphones
Image via Wikipedia

Everyone loves chocolate cake but can’t everyone make one from scratch. Same with listening to music. If you don’t have the right ingredients its not going to sound right at all. So here’s a few things to consider when firing up the sound cannons or just tuning in to WBPM NetRADIO.

Computers are rapidly becoming the platform of choice when listening to music.

Just think, not to far back (for some of you…I know who you are too!!) the only way you could take your music somewhere and hear it was to lug around bulky boom boxes (shoot, some of them were off the hook!!) or crates of records and tapes. I remember barely over decade ago I was tickled at the idea of rollerblading with my portable mini-disc player and not having to carry around a bunch of cassettes (CDs were out of the question).

Since then things have improved totally.

Today you can carry a tiny iPOD stuff with days of sound weighing less than the batteries used in the old cassette Walkmans. They sound a lot better too!

One problem though…today we are faced with a huge choice of headgear and not a lot of information as to which ones are best for our needs. Here’s a little information for those who care to know…

The word used for headphones by Djs and Recording folks and the like is “cans”.

There are basically four types of headphones.

Circumaural are the kind of headphones that completely fit over and around the ears. Check out the ones at the top of the page. These are sometimes called “full sized” headphones. They tend to be the largest and often the heaviest kinds of “cans”. They offer the most isolation from outside or external noise.

Supra-aural headphones sit on the ear. These were the headphones you got when you brought a Walkman back in the day. They don’t do a very good job of blocking external sounds from the listener. But are less expensive that the Circumaural type.

Ear Buds fit into your ear but not into your ear canal. Most personal sound gear comes with these now. The sound quality can vary greatly between manufacturers. When buying replacements compare the specifications on the backs of the packages.

Note: The higher the Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) the better. healthy younger people generally can hear sounds between the range of 20Hz and 20,000Hz (or 20KHz) better than older folks. A person’s hearing gets worse with age.

IEM‘s or In Ear Monitors fit directly into your ear canal. They act like earplugs and headphones at the same time. There are two types universal fit and custom fit. To have a set of customs, a cast would have to be made of your ear canal. See the money burning yet?

There are all manner of engineering designs for headphones resulting in various methods of getting sounds from them into your head. But I want to keep this simple for practical purposes…

Headphones are generally “Dynamic” or “Electrostatic”.

Dynamic headphones work using the same principles are your regular speakers. Magnetic fields are generated to cause the voice coil to move the diaphram pushing air in order to create sound.

Electrostatic headsets have no voice coil. They have a diaphragm suspended between two perforated metal plates. Depending on the charge being applied to the plates at any given moment, the diaphragm is either drawn towards or away from the plates. This causes the diaphragm to move the air through the holes in the metal plates to create sound.

It can take a lot more voltage (like up to one thousand volts!) to make this method work as compared to the voltage needed for dynamic headphones.

So Electrostatic headphones are more likely to be less common and more expensive.

One of the benefits of Electrostatic headphone is that it tends not to have the problems dealing with distortion and higher frequencies that regular dynamic headphones have.

Electrostatic types tend to have much better sound quality. Unless you are mad serious about squeezing every iota of sound into your head at the utmost quality, go with the dynamics and save your beans.

WARNING: Turn them things DOWN! Listening to headphones with the volume turned up will ultimately result in hearing loss. It may be temporary (you’d better hope so) or permanent. So why take a chance.

I have permanent damage in my right ear after using (unknown to me) a faulty headset while in the military. I powered up the receiver and it made a loud cracking noise when and let’s just say things have not been the same since.

“Huh? What’s that?”

Here’s a few tips:

Don’t go for “cute”. Cute don’t stay cute for long if you discover you brought something that sounds like crap.

Consider how long you will be wearing the head gear. Look for comfort.

Consider what you will be doing while wearing the cans.

If your head is going to be moving about – say turning your head quickly – you really have to consider how secure the headgear sits on your head.

A very long time ago, (we are talking near dinosaur times) I was sitting in my basement jamming on some Rufus I was listening to the music through these niiiice Telephonic headphones. I had them cranking and Chaka screaming “Tell Me something goooood!!!” I had them headphones moving around on my head they were so loud.

My father was calling me and didn’t hear a thing. Dude stood right behind me calling my name and I never had a clue. So he walked up behind me and tapped me on the shoulder – scared the crap outta me. I spun my head so fast that I ended up looking into one of the “cans” (the part of the headphone that has the speaker and covers one of your ears) while the headphone remained on my head.

I looked so stoopid my Dad cracked up and said nevermind. But I digress…

Consider what kind of music you will be listening to.

Take into account where you will be using them. Will you be using them some place loud  like say a… Subway? Would it be wise to be ignorant of your surroundings? Or somwhere quiet like maybe an office or library?

Very few things can be as annoying as hearing what you don’t want to hear while trying to listen to your headphones or earbuds. So…if you can, try the listening gear out in the store and compare how much background noise you hear with the volume down low and with it at a comfortable level.

The more you don’t hear, the better the headphones or buds block out the outside sound. Bear in mind that you don’t want them to totally block out the sound. Imagine being told to look out and you don’t hear the warning…nuff said.

If they are wired consider cable length, thickness and the quality of the plug/connector on the end. Nothing irks me more than discovering the wire insulation is breaking away from connector because I know soon the wire itself will break from bending and flexing. Also take a look at where the wires actually connect to the headphone. Say you get up and walk somewhere farther than the cord can reach. Does the cord look like it can take an accidental pull without ripping out of the headphones or away from the plug?

Check and see if there are adapters included with the headphones. Most headphones come with a tiny 1/8″ stereo plug on the end of the cable (see picture above). A lot of gear uses larger jacks for connecting headphones. Look to see if there is an adapter that converts your teeny 1/8″ stereo plug into a 1/4″ standard stereo plug. If not you can usually find them at electronics parts stores (Radio Shack) or you might find them in places like Best Buy. You can also check musical instrument stores Like Sam Ash or Guitar Center which by the way are good places to check out some of the nicer headphones!

Okay I could’ve turned this “novella” into a serial. There are tons of specs one can consider when buyin anything. I’m not into getting absolutely “scientifically ridiculous” about this. That’s why I didn’t get crazy about the specifications. The main point is get what is good for you and the music.

Next time, speakers….

Wow…pt. 2

by on Dec.19, 2011, under The Musings

Wow…pt.2 goes like this…

English: American Christmas Tree

I get an email with a link to an article about what I posted recently here and it turns out very interesting indeed. So after all of the fuss it seems that Sprint put the word out to the OEMS to get that software off of the devices a.s.a.p.

Looks like the uproar created by the guy who exposed the logging software got through to the right people. Now I wonder if the rest of the cell carriers will follow suit with their gear…. (more here)

Meanwhile,

I just want to wish all of you out there the safest holiday that can be had. Get with the family and friends and have a good time. Just don’t let me have to catch you on “World’s Craziest Sh*t To Happen Caught on Video” on some cable channel okay?

And for those of you out there who have to work during the season…quit your beefin’ You know what I’m talking about!

All the best to each of you and here’s hoping 2012 is the end of the b.s. and the start of the good groove for you and me both!

Peace,

DJ

Remember, if it’s a real tree water that bad boy! And don’t forget to unplug the lights at night. If no one is up looking at it, why run up the light bill right? All it takes is a spark and a dry Christmas tree can toast an entire house before you have a chance to say “Oh Sh–!!!!!!!!!”

So…here’s the latest playing on WBPM NetRADIO

by on Nov.29, 2011, under Station Update

Sooo…

Ain't Nothin' Goin' on But the Rent

Dem bellies full eh? Now what? Back to the grind right?

How to get back into the swing of things?

Here’s a hint: Image online music with so much goodness.

Okay you twisted my arm!

1 of a kind Non-stop remixes featuring Stevie Wonder, EW&F, The Brides of Funkenstein, Moss, Change, Loose Ends, Gwen Guthrie, Bobby Lyle, Slave, Fatback Band, GAP Band, Jazzanova, KC & The Sunshine Band, Art of Noise, Dubmatix, SNAP, Buju Banton , Black Uhuru, Emo, Moonrock, Soulstice, B.T. Express, Joey Youngman, MC Solaar, Ron Carter, War,  A Tribe Called Quest, The Temptations, Con Funk Shun, Aretha Franklin, Funkdadelic, Levert, The Isley Brothers, Freddie Jackson, Diana Ross, Kim Hill, Dorothy Moore, Walt, Bobby Womack, Maze feat. Frankie Beverly, L.T.D., Barry White, Atlantic Starr, Midnight Star and quite a few others. And that’s only some of the latest music playing on WBPM NetRADIO. Some of the sets have a decidedly Old School feel to them. I guess that’s from going through my library of 12″ singles the other day. Ran up on a cut by Kwame & The New Beginning. I forgot I had that song! So I dropped it into “Set It Off” by Strafe, did something to “That’s the Way (I like It)” by KC & the Band. But you’ll have to listen to hear what it was that I did. The Slow Jam set is rocking too if I say so myself. Hearing Freddie Jackson again reminds me of the time I saw him performing in Eisenhower Pk out on Long Island years back. Crazy day. That’s all I’m saying.

But enough of that. You should be listening now. No telling what you’re missing if you’re not. Whatever is on I know it’s better than what’s on that other radio station. (Trust me. I know these things.)

Stay Sane,

DJ

P.S. Check out the advertisers. Might be something there that would make a nice gift for someone or yourself! 😉

P.P.S. Scroll down on the latest on Buju Banton’s Benefit Concert

One more thing: Was cool that Heavy D and Nick Ashford got props during Soul Train Awards…Great seeing The Ti- oops! I mean the Original 7even perform. It’s about time! Shoot! I heard what Gladys said. Did you?

But why no mention of Vesta? I’m jus’ sayin’.

Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy…

by on Sep.25, 2011, under Station Update

Vesta Williams

R.I.P. Vesta Williams

Seemed kinda like the right thing to say

considering the state of politcs lately…

“Ahm jus sayin'”

Okay, so a new set is up and running and you are probably wondering whats in it.

Here’s a clue:

I’ve added three Vesta Williams cuts to the latest set. It just  started streaming earlier today. “Don’t You Blow A Good Thing” b/w Morris Day‘s instrumental version of “Fishnet” b/w Vesta’s “Once Bitten”. Later I added “Congratulations” to the end of the set.

I’ve also added in a few classic R&B and club hits cuts like Steve Arrington‘s “Nobody Can Be You’, “Tramp” by Carla Thomas and Otis Redding, Keith Sweat‘s”I Want Her”, “Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll” by Vaughn Mason & Crew and others.

I might as well not be stingy and let you know I finally got “Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy” cleaned up and sounding great and it is in the set as well.

Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy

This is the uncut original out of print album version.

Yeah the 15 minute version…. heheheh… sounds good too! No turntable rumble or pops and clicks at all. You get to hear the song as it was intended. The solo that blew minds years ago now can blow yours. (For free no less!)

For you musicians… this is a cut you could do well to listen to. You will hear good production, arrangement and writing in this cut from end to end.

For the vocalists… If you can harmonize with others like these sisters do then YOU ARE ON POINT.

I Want This CD for Christmas!!

This is one of those cuts where even the backup singers put in work. Everything is firing on all cylinders.

What’s really important is that you get a chance to hear another awesome example of great female vocals working together. The Brides vocal work on this cut is something you just don’t hear often enough. (Too much auto-tuning going on the radio lately folks if ya asked me.) And it’s funky to boot.

Later you will hear cuts from all over including Art of Noise, Donald Byrd, Duke, Empress, Ralph Falcon, Aly-Us, Sister Sledge, Red X’s “House is the Message” (think “M.F.S.B.’s “Love Is The Message” with even bigger teeth), Louie Vega, The Muthafunkaz (still feeling “Whoa!”), Divas of Color, King Kooba and many more.

Okay enough reading .

Click the station widget on the right and get to listening!

Drop me a note after listening to the Brides. I’d like to get your responses..

Peace,

DJ

Ohhh Vesta…

by on Sep.24, 2011, under The Music

Vesta Williams

Vesta Williams

(That’s what I said when the news got to me …)

Ohhh Vesta  not you too…

Seems like everyday signs of our mortality being shown to us along our travels.

Vesta Williams showed us how beautiful sound could be.

Vesta caught my attention with “Don’t You Blow A Good Thing”. My reaction was “Who Dat!?!?”

I was told it was Chaka. I knew right away that wasn’t right. This new voice had a different kind of fullness. As though this sound was coming from an even deeper place. Then there was that bass line. So vicious. Next I fell on “Once Bitten” and I was hooked. The woman can “SANG!” (I meant to type that by the way editor)

Now this. Damn. Well, naturally WBPM NetRADIO joins in the chorus of condolences to everyone fortunate to have been touched by this amazing woman.

We lost another treasure.

R.I.P. Vesta Williams

Be sure you take care of yours.

If you’ve never heard the power of this woman’s voice, tune into the station. There is a new set up and her cuts are in there.

The entire new set is 3 hours or so long and includes some of the usual sonic goodness. Check it out and be sure to check out the Vesta Williams tracks that I made a point of including this weekend.

All the best to you and the family and friends of the amazing Vesta Williams…

Peace,

DJ

Connections & Disconnections

by on Sep.19, 2011, under The Music

Roger Troutman

Roger Troutman

You know that saying “Small World”?

It’s all about connections and disconnections. For example, consider a band like Zapp. Started by Lester and Roger Troutman, the group grew into the powerhouse most of us know as Zapp. But, before that it was Roger and the Human Body. Through a childhood friendship with Bootsy Collins that Zapp got major exposure through theMotor Booty Affair tour of ’79. A record deal, “More Bounce to the Ounce”  and opening performances for acts like Prince, the Commodores, Ashford and Simpson, Cameo, Kool and the Gang and the rest, they say, is history.

Wait a minute. I said connections and disconnections…

Go back a step.

Parliament-funkadelic (say that fast twenty times) was a mother lode of funk. Onboard the mothership was a cast of talent including Bootsy’s Rubber Band, The Horny Horns and The Brides of Funkenstein.

Dawn silva, Lynn Mabry, Jeanette Washington, Debbie Wright

Ahhh.. The Brides…. Did you know that original members Dawn Silva and Lynn Mabry backed up to Sly & The Family Stone? Later the Brides consisted of Silva, Sheila Horne and Jeanette McGruder. Did you also know that their album “Never Buy Texas from a

Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy

Cowboy” containing hits “Never Buy Texas from a Cowboy” and “Mother May I” features some of the best guitar solos you will ever hear? Later you could hear Dawn Silva on tour with The Gap Band during 1982.

Oh dag did it again..

Go back two steps!

1977

Reach for it by George Duke . All ‘N All by E.W.&F. Menagerie by Bill Withers. Angel by the Ohio Players. The Pride by the Isley Brothers. Ask Rufus by Rufus. Secrets by Con Funk Shun. The Force by Kool & The Gang.

George Duke hit us upside the head with “Reach For it” making heads snap around. Did you know it was an accidental hit? Came out of a set they were performing at The Cellar Door in D.C. (Thank You Ndugu!) Deep head nod to Byron Miller for the bass solo that won me bets  left and right (a lot of people thought it was Stanley Clarke due to Duke’s association with him). Hehehehehe…sorry guys! Not!

So you have Duke, Ndugu, Miller and company cutting up in D.C., the Mothership slittin’ about zappng the sonic doo-doo out of our minds and … come to think of it.. I think The George Duke Band is due in Detroit on the 24th of this month at the Opera House. (Next month you can may catch them on the Capitol Jazz Supercruise)… But I digress…

The above mentioned LPs share something in common something real simple and quite obvious…they are sounds of their time. They reflect where we’ve been and where we think we’re going as is all music when you think about it… Santana’s Abraxas reflects more than excellent guitar performances and it wasn’t all about Carlos either….

Connections and Disconnections…

Look into the the family trees of the bands and you will see many many familiar names down in there. Like James Brown, Fred Wesley, Bernie Worrell, Bootsey Collins, Gladys Knight and The Pips, Stanley Clarke, Frank Zappa, Airto, Flora Purim, Billy Cobham, Santana, Al Johnson, Weather Report, Dianne Reeves, Earth, Wind & Fire (who included in its roster Ronnie Laws and Roland Bautistsa who also played with George Duke), Herbie Hancock (who played with everybody!), Shiela E , Ramsey Lewis (remember Sun Goddess? That was done with E,W&F)…

The roots run deep no matter which branch you follow. Something to consider when the media foists upon you the” latest new never heard before new to the planet genius” of some sort.Whether it is music related or about politics, everyone is connected somehow some way. There’s no escaping it.

Connections and disconnections.

It’s all in the mix. Without some there’d be none. It’s not about who came first its about when. Just like it is about what plays when not who. Because in the end it’s all about what.

Listen carefully and you will hear what I mean.

I’d like to also note with regret the passing of a local institution here in Tampa. WTMP 96.1 FM 1150AM is no longer broadcasting R&B and community related programming to Tampa’s Black community. It’s reported in local papers the owners lost control of the stations to a New York based hedge fund through a financing deal gone sour. Visits to their web site shows the format will focus on the latin community. I hope that the sound of ‘TMP will rise again. The community needs it. Read more here.

What are you doing?

by on Sep.02, 2011, under The Musings

Traffic congestion, Sao Paulo, Brazil

Now THIS is traffic!

That’s what bounced around the inside of my skull earlier today.

“What are you doing?”

Huh? I’m driving around in the crazy Tampa traffic. That’s what I was doing when the question floated up. The thought came right after the notion that there is absolutely no reason on this earth that a town this small should have such traffic congestion. It’s not like I’m on the BQE in NYC or stuck on 495 circling D.C. or sitting debating whether I should’ve taken 90 instead of 94 out of Chicago or which is quicker from Kearny Mesa during afternoon “rush” 805 or 15 to hit I-8 and head east…..

Then the question came…again:

“What are you doing?

Huh?

I’m sitting here blowing dollars out the quad exhaust of this car at the moment getting damn near zero miles per gallon (more like getting gallons per mile).

As traffic eased and I started to move the question kept repeating…”What are you doing?”

Whaat?!?

I’m moving, that’s what I’m doing. I’m motivating down the street!! Jeez….

I get in the drive way, I park the car, I head inside and I sit down and stare at the mixer and yet again…

“What are you doing?”

Rolling my eyes…I heaved out a sigh and thought… “I’m going to go ahead and upload the latest set right now…satisfied? Jeeez….Come to think of it, I gotta do that internet radio station clean-up routine too!”

I see that we have some new listeners out there. Cool!

So you’ve heard some of the recent sets. I hope you enjoy them and hang around because I have plans (rubbin’ hands together)… The songs of the latest set have been picked with some of everyone in mind …Guess who if you dare….Or there might be a song that kinda fits your day if you know what I mean….

In any case…

“What are you doing?”

Did you know you can now listen to WBPM NetRADIO with your Android based phone from anywhere?

New Music Set Today!

by on Jul.21, 2011, under Station Update

A new music set is streaming now! But more on that later…

Crystal Waters

Crystal Waters

It’s nearly the end of another sweltering week… (And they smirked at the term “global warming” Ha!)

Just wanted to drop a few words on ya.

The latest set is streaming now featuring some Reggae, Bachata and House mixes plus a number of cuts from back in the day (very melodical ones I might add). This set is a more “genre” blending” in nature so don’t be surprised how you will hear Buju Banton, Shabba Ranks, Soul II Soul, The O’Jays, Brothers Johnson, Prince, George Duke, Cheb Tarik, Common, A Tribe Call Quest, Jill Scott, Dred Stock, Mutabaruka, Parliament, Whodini, One Way, The Temptations, Cameo, Raydio (remember Ray Parker? One of the best guitarists!), Anthony Santos, Amp Fiddler, Tony Lee, Ovasoul7, Gotan Project, Ron Basejam, The Demetrios Project, Marques Wyatt as the sneak into your speakers. Okay?

I played Crystal Waters’ last.

Read on to learn why….

I was sitting at a light wondering how many gallons of gas my A/C was sucking up with all this heat out there. They say it was in the nineties. I’m thinking triple digits. Idly glancing around the intersection I noticed this woman sitting on the median with a water bottle.

She was trying to sell it to make some change. I got to thinking “Jeez, that’s gotta be brutal.” Especially since the drivers of the cars right next to her seemed to not even acknowledge her even being there. (I was about six cars back).

She looked like she could really use a few sales. It was obvious that she and her competitors on the other medians had all seen better times. I got to thinking about “these times…”

The driver behind me honked his horn … the light had changed and the cars ahead of me were just starting to move (some people…yanno?). Soooo…

I stopped and brought two bottles. One for me and one for the “jackalope” behind me. I asked the lady selling the water to take one back to the guy behind me with a message…

“Chill the fuck out and take a blink.”

La-Da-Deee..La-Da-Dahhhh…  La-Da-Deee..La-Da-Dahhhh…   La-Da-Deee..La-Da-Dahhhh…

So, about the music playing now…

by on Jul.11, 2011, under Station Update

Dexter Wansel

So, about the music playing now… yeah the heat continues down here… as does the rain…

I like rain – up to a point. And, we are past that! I was standing out in the yard the other day and I could’ve sworn I could see the grass growing! But, I have to admit it looks a lot better green. So as the clouds rolled back in pregnant with mega gallons of wetness poised to plunge down upon my dreads I headed back in. Okay the lightening convinced me to go inside. But I digress…

I put on my “sound cannons” and decided to create a few new sets. I was feeling a bit of nostalgic for the old school groove with a touch of brazilian style drumming mixed in so this week you will hear both! Dr Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band, Powerhouse 3, Domu, Mann Parrish, N.Y.C. Peech Boys (where the heck is my “Life is Something Special 12”?!?!?), Dazz Band, War (check out the remix! It features their cut “Southern Part of Texas”, Me’Shell NdegeOcello, Billy Preston (sw a repeat of Blues Brothers 2000 a while back and he’s been on my head ever since…), Mr. Fingers, The Time, Sister Sledge are all included in the latest set. The mix of Salz’ “Honey Be Good and Jazzanova’s “Glow and Glare is nice if I say so myself! So, I think this set will prove quite interesting for those of you who like to listen to what is happening in the music as you hear it….

And just ’cause I was asked, yes you can catch replay’s of Wa’D’s sets not to forget his Wednesday set at 7:30Pm Eastern US time. His sets includes a number of artists that those with multi-genre tastes will definitely appreciate including Kleeer, Shiela E. Madhouse, Dennis Springer, Marcus Johnson 7 Maysa, Crown Heights Affair, Dexter Wansel, First Light and many more. You should definitely do yourselves a big favor and try to catch those sets!

Other artists that will also be heard if you tune in with a quickness…

Bohannon, Ovasoul 7,Elements of Life, Fredrik Stark, Victor Rosado (very rare version of Johnny Hammond’s cut “Los Conquistadores Chocolate”),Naked Rhythm, Chevel, Bobbi Humphrey, The Blackbyrds, Weekender, Brothers Johnson, The Crusaders, Georges Benson & Duke, Ronnie Laws, Johnny Hammond, Kenny Dope, DJ Tonk, Midnight Express, Mark Farina, Black Magic, Jay  Tripwire, Sheila E., Quant, Lee, Lisa Shaw and many  more….

Now to answer a few questions….

  1. No you won’t find that version of “Skin I’m In” anywhere else. Sorry!
  2. Nope, that Tony Toni Tone remix if “Feels Good” will only be played here.
  3. I dunno why I mixed Parliament’s “Night of the Thumpasaurus Peoples” with the Masters At Work  mix of Rain/Give It Up (A Lil Louis Painting). It just felt right.
  4. Yes that mix of Raze’s “Break For Love” into DJ Languages “Close To You” does seem very visual in an aural sense. Hahaha!! Uhuh! That’s what I saw in my mind’s eye as it played too!
  5. I dunno. Let me know…in the meantime sign up as a VIP and lose the commercial breaks.
  6. No you are not missing anything. The music picks up right where it left off at. The mixes are designed so that VIPs get a nonstop flow. (See the above answer for solution *wink*)
  7. Yes I’m also a musician and I think that is sometimes a blessing and a curse when listening to other mixes or some DJs in certain clubs. (Dudes’ need to stop singing over the mike yanno?)
  8. Well, your mission “Mr. Phelps” is to put an ear on this and see what comes to mind. Then get back at me.

Peace,

DJ

Funk N Jazz…

by on Jun.30, 2011, under Station Update

The Definitive Collection (Cameo album)

Cameo

It’s been hot as you know what down here!

Now the rainy season is kicking in a with a vengeance! Now, after so many weeks without a drop out of the sky, the clouds have been rolling in and opening up. So what’s been up? Here’s what…

New sets have been rolling through the stream non-stop now.

I hope you’ve had a chance to sample some of Wa’ D’s Sets during “The Jazz” breaks on Tuesday nights. Just in case didn’t, portions will play throughout the week so keep your ears peeled. I heard some really great stuff. Nice really nice. Brother definitely feels the flow. You will appreciate his knack for pulling out the good stuff and dropping it just at the right time. Here’s very abbreviated list of some of the artists that he’s been playing:

Spyro Gyra, Bobby Womack, Jeff Lorber, Billy Cobham, Alphonse Mouzon, Rodney Jordan, N-Groove, Henry Johnson, Donald Byrd, Everett Harp, Gemini Soul, Wolfgang Haffner, Lonnie Liston Smith, Ronnie Foster, Lessette Wilson, Paul Taylor and  Hiroshima. Just to name a few!

Later today another set comes online. There’s more but I’m not going to give it all away except to tease you with some music from a number of prolific bands. Mandrill, G.C.S., Funkadelic and The Blackbyrds to name a small few.

Okay, okay you twisted my arm…

At the very top is a never heard before remix of Cameo’s “Skin I’m In” with a twist of J-Boogie dusted on followed by a taste of the GAP Band’s “I don’t Believe You Want To Get Up and Dance“. That’s going to lead into an interesting blend of Janet J’s Nasty (Cool Summer Mix) and Slope’s Funk. There’s more but I’m not saying (too much typin’ man!)

Tune in and listen (A Lot!!) and drop us a line and let us know what you think okay?

Peace,

DJ

The 2011 Listener Survey

by on Apr.25, 2011, under Station Update

Okay folks I’m turning the tables and making a request….

I need you to take 3 or 4 minutes and fill out the listener survey at the bottom of the page.

If you listen I want your opinion.

I know most of you listen for FREE online, especially when you travel or play video games or work from home running your home business from your computer!

The last time a survey was taken, the data indicated that most of you were female between the ages of 25 and 65, listened to WBPM NetRADIO at work and at home in the bed.

Now that you can listen on your smart phone, ipads and in some cases in your cars I want to know what has changed since then. Please fill out the poll and help me get a clue!

It’s pain free, quick and simple and by filing out the survey you will helping me to continue to promote the music we all love!

It would be huge and I (among a number of other folks who may or may not help me really do some great things) would love to know what you think about the station. Fill out this short survey. After 7 years on the air I think some of you 1200+ listeners has an opinion or two so why not share them with me.

Would you like news on various topics, or how to make money online, things about travel or hotel specials,  health and fitness, more Music or general entertainment news? Or..maybe you want news about electronics or photography. How about access to ebooks or articles on how to do minor things to take care of your car? Whatever …it helps to know what people want… I know, I know..there’s a saying “Give the people what they want and they want it all the time..” that’s cool.

What I get out of all of this..

First, the information you provide would help me to make the station even better from a listener’s point of view. I have additional DJs standing by ready to come online and need to know what they need to know to play for you.

Second, this project costs a pretty penny. Not to mention the music costs, there are licensing costs, equipment costs (the next mixer upgrade is already at the $2,000 mark!) and in order to take this station to where I want it to be this site has to make  “moolah” – “ducats” – “dinero” – ” cheese” – “bus fare” – “eggs and bacon” … (scratch that…that was breakfast). So, with the information you provide “I” (or) “We” (but really) “Me” will be able to know which way to flow…

Or it could convince me to hang it up.

So…What do you say?

Takes me back (again) …

by on Feb.22, 2011, under Station Update, The Musings

Takes me back to then…

“All these goings on over in Africa…”

Well…

just do what you do but do it right…(isn’t that a song from somewhere?)

“Huh?”

northern-africa

It’s like Deja vu all over again…

…you say? Here’s a clue. Check your maps …. Don’t forget Sudan..both of them… (okay shoot the map guy!)

#Libya #Tunisia #Egypt … Imagine that…(Good luck people)

(Still feelin’ woozy? Here is why I feel it’s like deja vu all over again. Come back when you’re finished.)

So remember kiddies…let these times be a lesson. All it takes is to remove the pebble out from under the boulder to get it to start  rolling downhill. Oh, and never buy Texas from a Cowboy (remember that cut?).

Can you draw a line between those places on the map and Wisconsin or more recently Texas and relate? Can you see how one group  is fighting to hold on while others are trying to get a hold? Do you understand the machinations behind the opposition to those movements is about power while the protagonists are fighting for the right?

Well the Isley’s said it first. “You’ve got to fight the powers that be.”

While the Temps shook their heads muttering It’s all a “Ball of Confusion…”

While you contemplate what in the world I am talking about ..know this…

I’ve added more tracks into the rotation so if you tune in you will hear additional amazing sets created from deep within the catacombs of WBPM NetRADIO. There’s House, Jazz, Hip Hop, R&B, World Beat, Deep House Grooves, Chill Beats, Reggae and much more from across the planet. Get it while it’s hot!

Later!

DJ

P.S.: 2nd Chance part 1. This mess is playing out like a Billy Preston record. What you’ve read is a post from about two years ago. Now step back into real time and ask yourself “that on the radio again?” Click and see why I say what I say when I said it today.

Shoutout & Update…

by on Feb.07, 2011, under Station Update, The Musings

peaceful demonstrations @ Tahrir square Cairo ...

Yo EGYPT!!!!!

Things done went buck wild up in there for a minute -hey!!?!! Go head. Do what you do. Old dude been up in it way too long. Time flied while he was having fun no? All of y’all get together and save one of the greatest lights of humanity okay? Because that’s what #Egypt is to me. I wanna visit the pyramids. I look forward to walking through #Cairo’s Tahrir Square one day. Be safe. Feel me?

Now for the mundane stuff….

The station survived the weekend maintenance update. Sounds like the breaks between the tracks are nearly impossible to hear.

Yaaaaaaay!!

See, you folks who are listening for free have no idea how the station really sounds because you keep getting those stoopid commercials dropped on you right in the middle of the best parts of the mixes. Doncha hate that? Kinda frustrating isn’t it? Like those times when you are just about to get into or do something you really want/need to do and someone knocks at the door or calls you. P.I.T.A.  right? Check this out. Try VIP mode for free listen to the station for a while. I guarantee you will see the point I’m trying to make.

During the down time..somehow..some way… 30 more hours of mixes were uploaded while the sets that were playing last week are GONE!(Okay, okay I left one up there…betcha can’t pick which one!)

Gee, wonder how that happened?

Click the widget to the right to see what I uploaded for your ears. Hopefully it will help you snow bunnies up there in the cold cold north slip through your day.

Check out the lyrics to WHOA! by Muthafunkaz. Cracks me up. One of the best arrangements I have heard in a while. Nicely done. (The mix I dropped them into ain’t too shabby either but who’s braggin’?)

This week is filled with the kind of music you don’t hear on those “other” stations. It’s about they get mixed in because they fit in. And some cuts were simply fit in. But that’s another story.

One quick note:

Before you tune in with your new fangled iPads and tablets check your data plans. If you’re near wi-fi, use that. Its better also word is out that a certain cell phone carrier who’s name makes one look to the horizon (c’mon that was witty as hell…no?)  is considering throttling back heavy bandwidth users…which reminds me..it’s been time to switch!

Upcoming Stream Maintenance Period…

On February 5, 2011, between 9pm and February 6th 3am EST (2-8 GMT/UTC), our carrier network will be performing a major production database upgrade. During the extended maintenance period, the WBPM NetRADIO website will remain up but the station stream may not be available for periods during that time. If you are connected and listening to the stream when the maintenance begins you will not be dropped immediately. If your connection drops during the maintenance period you may find it hard to re-connect to the the station. Just so ya know!

The Official WBPM NetRADIO store hosted by Cafepress will be finally closing this coming February 28th at Midnight Eastern Standard Time.

Visit the store now by clicking HERE.

If you have not had a chance to check out the goodies, now is the time to do so. Once the store closes it will be closed. There will be no surplus items on sale, no left over rare one of a kind clothing or artwork. So get the goods while you can!

I want to thank those of you who’ve brought items from the store over the years. From the one of a kind WBPM NetRADIO Sweat Hoodies, the “Muse” series of ladies Tees, the coffee lover items and the artworks. Thank You all!

Why is the store going away? Slow sales / The Economy / pricing….  There are a number of factors but be sure it was like WBPM NetRADIO a labor of love. And as the store goes away (I personally am proud of) the fact that there are people on opposite sides of the planet wearing WBPM NetRADIO designs is in and of itself an achievement. So again thank you and thanks for the support.

Peace,

DJ

I have something for you to think about…

There’s a site called www.spokeo.com that’s a new online USA phone book w/personal information: everything from pics you’ve posted on FB or web, your approx credit score, home value, income, age. Remove yourself by searching your name, find and copy the URL of your page, then go to the bottom right corner of the page and click on the Privacy button to remove yourself. Copy & re-post so your FB friends are aware.

I would think people would rather they had the option as to what they put out in the public domain. Especially with companies attempting to profit at your expense…

What do you think?

Huh? What is it? (House Music)

by on Jan.14, 2011, under The Music, The Musings

Huh? What is it? (House Music)

Dennis Ferrer mixing house music

I was talking to a good friend of mine today…

(He’s like a musicologist. Always ready with some info I would’ve never even had a clue about. He’s the “who played with who when before we even heard of them back when they were like 15” kinda deep.)

about music in general and house in particular.

The conversation started of with a hint of how we “lacked an appreciation” for those chipmunk sounding chics coming with noise and having nothing to say yadda-yadda-yadda….

We eventually talked about music from back in the day.

The early days of hip hop music, vocalists like Chaka, Aretha, Luther, Melle Mel and his fellow furious ones, Patryce Banks, the funk and nothing but the funk, bands and on and on. We talked about famous radio people that broke the hottest music like Crocker, O’jay, Byrd, Higginson, Renee and others. We talked about their influence they and what other influences had on House Music. We talked tossed names like Levan and others. We talked about “traditional” R&B music acts that had tried to cross over via disco and our impressions of the results. Some successful and some spectacular flame outs. We even talked about the disappearance of “The Bands”…

English: Photo of the front of 1520 Sedgwick A...

1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Western Bronx. Kool Herc, generally credited as the originator of hip-hop music, lived and threw his first parties in this building. Photo from July 2009. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

I told about how I saw Earth, Wind and Fire disappear off the stage in front of everyone at the concert in such a way that made people put out their joints. We talked about our impressions of the Isleys in concert and of course how many times we experienced P-Funk Live….

Then we got quiet… (Thinking…being introspective…hmmmm)

After a few minutes …

we looked at each other and at the same time asked…

“What happened to all the clubs?!??”

We practically heard crickets in response.

My thoughts drifted to the famous NY clubs from back in “my” day. Nels, The Down Under, The Shelter, Garage and others. Spot sin Brooklyn I’ve passed through and totally enjoyed yet now sadly can’t even remember the names to. We started talking about the artists who would come through and do club dates (too many lip synch‘d but I understand totally).

After few puffs on the minted cigar and Mojito I’d come to enjoy, the question came out…

“So..uhh what is House Music anyway?”

We both cracked up as we fumbled for an explanation. There were so many terms and definitions used to describe, define or confine it. Most have been recited and retold. Just in case, we mumbled through half of them. (Even the infamous..”Music in the house” one.)

After a good laugh and a few sips we just looked at each other I said “#House Music is….”

“…The Shit.” He finished the sentence.
