10 years Later! A Decade of Streaming Music on Internet Radio

by on Apr.03, 2014, under The Music, The Musings, The Other Stuff

frankie knuckles way

Frankie Knuckles Way (Photo credit: Like A Final Boss)

Wow.. its been an entire decade streaming music via the internet…amazing…

First off I would like to pass along my deepest condolences to the Family, Friends and Fans of Mr. Francis Nicholls

Known to the most of us as Frankie Knuckles one of the originators of a music that permeates what we hear to this day. His accomplishments are legend and he is respected throughout the music industry working with some of the brightest stars in the Galaxy of music. (See the video the real story of house music here.)

I would be remiss to also celebrate the life and times of Ms. Joyce Beachum.

Most of you don’t know her like you are familiar with Mr. Knuckles but to those who do, she’s right up there with those you know as one of the most positive caring humans to have ever walked this planet. So, much respect sister. I miss you.

All this comes wrapped up in the realization that WBPM NetRADIO is celebrating a decade of streaming music to the planet. It started with me getting tired of lugging a stack of CDs to work and ended up as this. Along the way I have been in contact with some amazing people and have been encouraged by people like Joyce while inspired by the likes of Frankie (Knuckles and Crocker to name a few).

I want to thank all of the indie artists who decided to allow me the honor of presenting their music. I want to thank those like Joyce Sims, Mic Murphy (The System) and Chris Jasper for especially reaching out to me and allowing me the opportunity to pass the goodness to you.

Imagine the shock of realizing that the stream set up to allow me to listen to what I wanted to hear at work was being listened to by someone somewhere else! Dag, now I have to do it “right”! Or, the day I received an email stating that the station was Voted the Best in R&B & Jazz about a year after it went live and also topping the Garage Music genre @ Live365.com last year! The nerves that frayed when a live show went dead because my feed to the internet temporarily failed..that was fugly. The joy when someone in Japan brought an official WBPM NetRADIO T-Shirt or seeing that there were people on the planet listening in places where I didn’t even realize they had internent access! Like island out in the middle of the Indian Ocean.

We talked about Jazz and Funk and Hip Hop and of course House and some of its “sonic temples“. We talked about R&B and the stars of Soul. We talked about how its all connected and gave examples.

Here you saw responses to world events from NY to Arizona the other side of the world. Even here in the “Sunshine State” (Let me go on record now: SCOTT HAS GOT TO GO. There I did it again.)  Had some small fun with a wannabe  and  You’ve even been warned…

Seems like this site has almost become a chronicle of sorts as well, honoring those who’ve gone on the next stage in their journey. Never forget the George Dukes (see his last video), Vesta Williams, the Nick Ashfords (video) , Clarence Clemmons‘, Phoebe Snows ,  Gary Shider and of course the Whitneys of our worlds (to name a few). They are legion and their contributions to simply existing made the process that more bearable…

So, enough of that, I could go on and on and on…

In celebration there will be new mix sets streaming all this month featuring the cuts that have played and you’ve voted for as your favorites.  Starting this afternoon (like about now!), you’ll hear cuts from the 70’s, 80’s, 90s right up to the latest cuts released these past few days.

Here’s a clue as to the diversity of artists that have been heard on this stream

Here’s another clue with pictures!

So, as this is also an invite, click the player on the right hand side of the page and see what you’ve been missing if you’ve never tuned in before and cruise the site to see what’s been bubbling through here too!

If you have listened but have not been here since a live broadcast, you too should stick an ear in!

And to those of you who’ve listened all along I say thanks so much for making this worth the while!

Peace,

DJ

Music Radio…

by on Aug.01, 2013, under Station Update

Music Radio…

VIP

You should be a VIP.

Seems to be so commercialized. You get a few good songs mixed in with a stretch of music that you hear over and over and over again peppered with the same commercials. That was how I felt when I first started this station years back. Adding to that was the fact that I was unable to listen to what I wanted to hear at work. The reception was terrible inside the building and the hours I spent at that job was during a time when radio basically went to a infomercial format during the early hours of the morning. Nothing to groove to.

I started lugging CDs to play while at my desk to help pass the time faster. They started piling up.

One night while up late at home I cruised the ‘net and came across an internet radio station from Sweden and they were literally jamming. They were blowing out some of the cuts I would’ve loved to hear at work but have not heard since “back in the day”. But something was missing. Hmmm…

I dug a little deeper and learned how they were able to legally do what they were doing without being sued by the labels and the rights organizations. I decided to start my own station so that I could tune in and listen while at work and no no longer have to lug all those doggone CDs.

I started WBPM NetRADIO in earnest. See, I had played around with doing an internet based radio station years earlier while in NY but was unfamiliar with all of the rules and regulations that went along with doing such a project so it kind of went into a sort of stasis mode.

But at this point after cruising the ‘net I was seeing that with the higher availability of faster internet access starting a station was now feasible yet still kind of pricey. I plunged ahead anyway.

Nearly a decade later here we are. WBPM NetRADIO is heard globally and has been listened to in places I wouldn’t have imagined.

Who would’ve thought that beyond listeners in the U.S. that this station would be picked up in such countries as the UK, Costa Rica, Canada, Japan, Mexico, Germany, Greece, Belgium, Turkey, Nigeria, Portugal, France, Switzerland, Singapore, Brazil, Denmark, Korea, Russia, Spain, The Netherlands, Australia, Isreal, Cyprus, Italy, Taiwan, Argentina, The Phillippines, Ethiopia, Chile, Colombia, Sweden, Venezuela, Serbia, the Czech Republic, Namibia, Qatar, the Dominican Republic, Peru, Poland, Thailand, Iraq, Hungary, Malta, Ireland, Martinique, Egypt and the People’s Republic of China. And, that’s in the past month alone! I was honestly surprised when all those years ago to find someone else listening to a stream I put together so that I could listen at work. (I find it ever interesting how people in countries that “oppose” each other have no problem listening to the same kinds of music. Just something that makes me go “Hmm…”)

Thank you.

This month (assuming no further catastrophic equipment flameouts) you will hear the works of some new independent artists and artists you may be familiar with. Including in the latest play lists are Red X, Quentin Harris, DJ SPen, Maurice Joshua, Lem Springsteen, Black Coffee, Roy Ayers, Joey Negro,Sunkids, Charice, Mimistry of Funk, Jacob London, Martin Venetjoki, Kerri Chandler, DJ Dove, Joyce Sims (new cut coming out and it is TIGHT!), Laura Vane, Ken ECB, Jon Cutler, Chris Carrier, Funk La Planet All Stars, Dennis Ferrer, Lil Louis, Teena Marie, Only Freak, DJ Mike Cruz,Byron Stinglily, Jay Tripwire, Erykah Badu, Unforscene, J. Boogie, Bassnectar, King Kooba, Uman, Platinum Pied Pipers, Stevie Wonder, Pleasure, Mark Farina, Jocelyn Brown, Rebirth, Loose Ends, Jazzanova, Parliament, Lisa Shaw, Inner City, Kings of Tomorrow, Capitol A, Mercury, Praxis, Black Box, Raze, Elements of Life, Nuyorican Soul, Delano Smith, Roland Clark, Marxman, Steel Pulse, Eva Be, Groove Theory, Praful, Jill Scott, Maxwell, Mad Lion, Barry White, Soul II Soul, Howard Johnson, War, Marques Wyatt, Miguel Migs, David Bowie, Martin Luther, Grace Jones, Nice & Smooth, East Side Movement, Andy Caldwell and dozens of other artists from a wide variety of genres.

But here’s the rub.

In order to be able to stream all of this music and keep getting my paws on more takes people signing up as a VIP listener. Doing so benefits WBPM NetRADIO as well as those who do. When you sign up as a VIP you get to listen to the music without any interruptions. WBPM NetRADIO earns a small (make that damn near tiny) fee for every hour you tune in as a VIP. Remember VIP status means NO COMMERCIALS at all. Just non-stop music that is mixed so that it is a well blended stream of R&B, House music, Jazz, Fusion, Blues, Reggae, Down Tempo grooves and Chilled Beats. One song mixed into the next.

I tried listening to the free stream and I have to admit listening to three or four songs in a row only to hear the some commercial I just heard not too long ago killed me. I know some of them by heart now! I don’t know why many would rather listen to the commercials!

Try the VIP trial and let me know if you agree that this station sounds totally different and entirely better commercial free.

Stay sane (’cause it is nuts out there lately)

Peace,

DJ

Jazz…This Feels Good

by on Jun.19, 2013, under Station Update, The Music, The Musings

Jazz…This Feels Good

I’ve been cruising the ‘net the past week doing of all things using Google satellite maps to see how places I’ve been have changed over time. These were some special places where I heard some amazing music for the first time and met some people that to this day I have yet to forget.

There was a lot of shock as (as expected) some things never stay the same. In one case, I had the hardest time finding one spot in Orlando. Jeez! Where is it?!? I heard Johnny “Guitar” Watson there for the first time! How could it be gone?  I just could not seem to pick it out from the images but I could still hear Dexter Wanzel in the back of my mind. I eventually discovered the reason I couldn’t find the spot was because it had been entirely wiped off the face of the planet. Boo Hiss.

But the good news is that recently a copy of Dexter Wanzel’s “What The World Is Coming To” landed into my grubby hands (you know what I did with it right?)

Next I spun the globe a bit further south – landed on Puerto Rico (Mi corazon) – and was

Rodney Franklin

Rodney Franklin

immediately reminded of a few more people who I learned a lot from. Some through conversation and some through observation. This is where Jazz really smacked my up side my head HARD. So hard in fact I dragged a now raggedy taped copy of Rodney Franklin‘s “Felix Leo” (from his “You’ll Never Know” LP) around with me for decades ever since. Thanks “Bing” (the person not the search engine), “Reesie”, Steph, Melvin, Larry, Cully, “NightTrain”, Jessie (bet you wish you kept your Challenger … Or did you?), Jemma and the rest of the gang… After searching FOREVER for a newer copy, a CD arrived in the box this week too! (Yay!)

Sometimes you hear or learn things that stick with you through life. It’s like that thing has been tattooed to your brain.

You don’t even have to try and remember it. It is just there. One fine summer day, I was listening to WBLS in NY and this song came on. Dripping with synths and a bass line that kept up and sometimes led. Stopped me dead in my tracks. This was Return to Forever but different. “Who IS that?”. Naturally the song went off without even a mention of the title.

Damn…

I must’ve spent the better part of the following month trying to tape it off of the radio (its that old). Finally I got it! George Duke‘s “Dawn” from the out of print “The Aura Will Prevail” LP burned into my brain like oil on concrete as I learned to play every note of “Dawn” on my bass. George Duke’s “Dawn” aimed me at Weather Report, Return to Forever, Stanley Clarke, Billy Cobham and more… You know what happened right? (Hint: Tune in to hear this week’s Jazz Set)

Continuing on my little tour through time, I looked out “Left” to the west coast and found where I first heard of Steely Dan.

“Steely Who?”

San Diego was an interesting place musically to say the least. I’ve been luck to have met some real people out there too. And, it was the right place to hear Steely Dan’s “Aja” LP. Chuck Rainey‘s work on “Peg” snapped my neck while driving a monster Satellite Sebring Road Runner 4  speed down the 805 (Yeah… I’m kickin’ my own butt for not buying that one…) . “Deacon Blues” played while Balboa Park’s Globe Theater burned (they ever rebuild that?). Anyhoo… you know the drill right? (For the slower pedestrians… CHECK OUT THE JAZZ SET)

Putting together these sets reminded me how good Jazz makes me feel as it reminds me of all the good people and times that thankfully came my way. I hope it does that to you too.

M en Ms

Everyone wants some…

More.

Me too! Shoot I remember when I was a kid the bag was never big enough and I would try to stretch the supply by only eating a few M&M’s…..still wanted more.

Chocolate cake…I wanted all of it. Fried Fish..loved it give me MORE!! Grape Kool-Aid? I wanted gallons. Ribs? Don’t even go there….I’m thinking side of Cow.

While I was listening to the station today I workied on another site adding of all things…

More.

More video, more audio files…even more ways to sell …more.

And I got to thinking…I could use more…

So I added more music to the server. 15 hours

More in fact.

Also added a new preview player…see that blue thing on the right hand side of the page?

If you don’t hear the music playing drag the volume thingy…you will hear (what else)

More.

By the way…

More of you are listening than ever before (thanks so much!!)

…And guess what? I want…

More!!!!

That really helps WBPM NetRADIO stay on the air. So tell anyone with two ears and a brain. Tell them what you heard that took you back or moved you or simply felt good. Tell them how unexpected the mixes can be. Like that time that Rick James cut popped up in the middle of “Body” or that version of Papa Was A Rolling Stone by the Temptations played and how you realized you never heard it like that before. Or, it seems you never really know when that last song came on…like it just was just…on!! Tell them how it seems you hear more voices and instruments on the songs unlike when you heard it on the radio or your iPod (yuck!). Show your eclectic nature by citing thw wide variety of genres you listen to on this station. Or better yet buy a t-shirt from the store (that was supposed to close but I got talked out of doing that…this time). It wouldn’t hurt to sell…

MORE!!

What would really help would be…

More Donations… I ain’t gonna lie…electricity ain’t cheap HAHAHA!!!

More Subscribers (heheheh you shoulda known that was coming right?). I see you out there! You might as well take the plunge. Become a subscriber and guess what? LESS interruptions!! Subscribers get a NON-STOP stream of music.

Hey do me a favor, help a dude out… check out JSO and tell me what you think? Been workin’ hard for the money!

Oh did I remember to mention there’s a new set up today?

On a slightly more serious note..

Fellow humans..

We need to think MORE & stop letting talking heads convince us to act against our own interests. End of Editorial!

Later!

Playing now on the station.
Stuff like Knee Deep, a cut by Man Parrish, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5, A version of Janet jackson’s “Nasty” that rarely if ever gets airplay, “Son of Reach For It” (How many of you “vintage appreciators” remember that cut) and many others.
That set is over 4 hrs long.

Also added a 6hr set of … well you’ll just have to listen to find out!
(trust me..its a good one!!)

That’s 10hrs of non-stop music for those of you have have signed up as VIP Members of the station.
Don’t forget to check out the links at the bottom of the page. Something REAL TASTY for you coffee lovers awaits you.

I know there are a number of you who follow “current events”. Seems sometimes like all hell is breaking loose. Makes me wanna both holla and chill.  All I can say is… “Don’t let ’em change you” (that’s one of the oldies playing too!!)

Remember … this tech is supposed to foster interaction so DROP ME A NOTE! LET ME KNOW WHAT’S UP ON YOUR END!
