The Other Duke…George Duke

Our most recent Duke, George, left us Monday August 5th 2013 and with his passing a gap in sound has been created.

I’d like to send my deepest condolences to those who knew and loved him best. I know I miss him.

That man over there on the right played with everyone from Rollins to Zappa to Cobham to Clarke to Miles and beyond. His is a sound that will move you whether you were into straightest ahead Jazz or the funkiest Funk. If anyone asks why have music in schools, just hip them to Duke. ‘Nuff said.

One if his early cuts “Dawn”(The Aura Will Prevail) was one of the first songs I learned to play on the bass. Many will point to his Brazilian Love Affair and Reach For It as his signature sound. But as he has said, his style is more of a gumbo. He was what they call a “Master Musician”.

Sure, plenty can bang on things, twang on things and push buttons. Few can create sound as in music. He’s composed some of the best fusion Jazz you will ever hear and some of the funkiest jams that could make you cuss. His Classical side is no joke either. Check out his “Muir Suite”. No doubt. People in the know will be talking about this one for a loooong time. I just hope that those of you who are “young” hear what’s being said and go listen for yourself. You deserve a break today. Yanno?

Check him on Bootsy Collins’ “The Funk Capitol of the World” Where they do a tribute to some of Jazz’s greatest artists. His catalog defies definition and the last album recently released will attest to the timelessness of his sound. You would be wrong to deny yourself a taste.  There are not enough adjectives to describe the monumental talent that has passed on.

So, I will just leave you with these. hopefully they will convey the positive energy this human being generated…

The music of George Duke will be featured thoughtout the coming week so you can hear what I’ve heard and maybe what you’ve been missing.

Peace,

DJ

Gary Shider….

Know who that is? P-funk fans know.

Okay… for those of you who’ve seen Parliament/Funkadelic in action over the years, remember the dude in the diaper? That’s Gary Shider. He was musical director of the band(s) as well as a signature guitarist.

He passed during June while myself, like many others, had my nose to the proverbial grindstone tryin’ to get over the proverbial hump.

My deepest sympathies to family, friends and fans.

So, what’s a signature guitarist? That’s a guitarist whose sound is so distinct that when you hear it you either know who is playing or it helps to immediately identify the person or the group the person plays in. There are signature musicians who play on other instruments as well. Marcus Miller, Stanley Clark, Miles Davis, Stuart Copeland (Police), Gato Barbieri, Tito Puente, Ray Barretto, Buddy Miles, Jimi Hendrix, Prince, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Larry Graham to name a very few.

Some people create a signature sound via the production of music. DJs do this all the time.  Some even add (enhance?) to the music via their production or arrangement skills. Adding horns where there were none originally creating “sweet spots” for example. Gary Snider did that too.

Funkateers..remember Maggot Brain? Michael didn’t always play alone did he? How about Up For The Downstroke? Yanno…I think that’s the cut that caught my ear. “Testify” was okay but I kinda took it as more of the music the “old folk” listened to.. so …yeah…Downstroke did it for me. But rather than drag your eyes across my aural memories… Here’s something to check out if you ever wanted to know anything about P-Funk. I found this page on a Duke site. So check it quick. No telling how long it will be there okay? The page is called Motherpage…Making You Funk The P-Funk

Scroll through and let me know what you think. There will be a test on it!!
