Upcoming Stream Maintenance Period…

On February 5, 2011, between 9pm and February 6th 3am EST (2-8 GMT/UTC), our carrier network will be performing a major production database upgrade. During the extended maintenance period, the WBPM NetRADIO website will remain up but the station stream may not be available for periods during that time. If you are connected and listening to the stream when the maintenance begins you will not be dropped immediately. If your connection drops during the maintenance period you may find it hard to re-connect to the the station. Just so ya know!

Huh? What is it? (House Music)

by on Jan.14, 2011, under The Music, The Musings

Huh? What is it? (House Music)

Dennis Ferrer mixing house music

I was talking to a good friend of mine today…

(He’s like a musicologist. Always ready with some info I would’ve never even had a clue about. He’s the “who played with who when before we even heard of them back when they were like 15” kinda deep.)

about music in general and house in particular.

The conversation started of with a hint of how we “lacked an appreciation” for those chipmunk sounding chics coming with noise and having nothing to say yadda-yadda-yadda….

We eventually talked about music from back in the day.

The early days of hip hop music, vocalists like Chaka, Aretha, Luther, Melle Mel and his fellow furious ones, Patryce Banks, the funk and nothing but the funk, bands and on and on. We talked about famous radio people that broke the hottest music like Crocker, O’jay, Byrd, Higginson, Renee and others. We talked about their influence they and what other influences had on House Music. We talked tossed names like Levan and others. We talked about “traditional” R&B music acts that had tried to cross over via disco and our impressions of the results. Some successful and some spectacular flame outs. We even talked about the disappearance of “The Bands”…

English: Photo of the front of 1520 Sedgwick A...

1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Western Bronx. Kool Herc, generally credited as the originator of hip-hop music, lived and threw his first parties in this building. Photo from July 2009. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

I told about how I saw Earth, Wind and Fire disappear off the stage in front of everyone at the concert in such a way that made people put out their joints. We talked about our impressions of the Isleys in concert and of course how many times we experienced P-Funk Live….

Then we got quiet… (Thinking…being introspective…hmmmm)

After a few minutes …

we looked at each other and at the same time asked…

“What happened to all the clubs?!??”

We practically heard crickets in response.

My thoughts drifted to the famous NY clubs from back in “my” day. Nels, The Down Under, The Shelter, Garage and others. Spot sin Brooklyn I’ve passed through and totally enjoyed yet now sadly can’t even remember the names to. We started talking about the artists who would come through and do club dates (too many lip synch‘d but I understand totally).

After few puffs on the minted cigar and Mojito I’d come to enjoy, the question came out…

“So..uhh what is House Music anyway?”

We both cracked up as we fumbled for an explanation. There were so many terms and definitions used to describe, define or confine it. Most have been recited and retold. Just in case, we mumbled through half of them. (Even the infamous..”Music in the house” one.)

After a good laugh and a few sips we just looked at each other I said “#House Music is….”

“…The Shit.” He finished the sentence.

Is That You?

by on Jan.04, 2011, under Station Update, The Music, The Musings, The Other Stuff

Happy new Year and all that …

I was going through the stats for the last month while doing end of year stuff and thought I’d share this and also my thanks to you for making this a truly global experience.

This is a list of cities that have had people visit this site and then listen to the station in the last 30 days. Right now -as of this moment- there are a total of 1,199 people who have set up their players or web browsers to directly listen to the station. Who will be 1200? What the data shows is that usually people hit the site first then click the widget over on the right hand side to listen. Interestingly there is another large group of people who connect directly to the station and then click to visit the site! Cool!! Two way traffic!

By the way.

Get $20 off! Become a V.I.P. (click the link)

Or get a FREE 5 Day Trial –>

What do you get? As a VIP you get to hear WBPM NetRADIO as it should be heard. That is without ANY interruptions. Just non-stop music. Imagine what the station sounds like without breaks. Ask a VIP who listens and see what they say. Oh much as I hate to admit it…you also get to tune into literally thousands of other commercial free stations as well. But I suspect that you may wander but you will always come back. Why because NO ONE else is streaming quite like this.

The first person who becomes  1200th person to save WBPM NetRADIO as a preset and becomes a VIP by clicking the banner below gets to pick something valued up to $25 from the WBPM Store.

I had a conversation recently with someone who claims I have a nice radio voice and wanted to know why no live shows recently. In short, I’m looking for the right equipment. One of my mixers died and it was absolutely perfect for doing live shows. The remaining ones are more an exercise in frustration more than anything else and I don’t think you want to hear me cussin’ in the background HAHAHA!!!

What does all these listeners mean to me? Well…hmmm….It means that maybe I am on the right track (?); Music is truly a universal language (?); Good Beats move feets (?). Maybe it means that we might have a lot more in common than some might want us to believe. I suspect that it might be a good thing that I keep my mouth shut and let the music pass the word instead. That make sense?

So, what does the coming year bring? I have not the slightest idea. Maybe people will start buying that WBPM NetRADIO gear I have on sale. That would keep the station on the air

Beatport Pool Party at the Winter Music Confer...
Image via Wikipedia

for another year. Or, maybe some hurting terrestrial radio station will discover what I am doing and PAY ME to come and play  program director helping them to dominate their market (yeahhh riiiiiiiiiiiiight!!).

Would be cool to get on Sirius. Anyone know anyone? I’d yap it up for that!!

It was pointed out that if each one of those 1,199 kind folks signed up as a VIP we could go live 24/7, upgrade the gear in here, do much more on the site with artists, upgrade the gear in here, and possibly stream video from special events at locations like New York and Miami (Did I mention upgrade the gear in here?). That would be cool since the Winter Music Conference is coming in about two months. Imagine getting live feeds from the events down there during that week (See photo at right heheheh!). (Looking around for a hat to pass right now!) Well, whatever happens in 2011 I wish us ALL the best and less headaches….

The Latest Set Starts Streaming Today!

by on Nov.22, 2010, under Station Update, The Music

Cover of "Nuyorican Soul"
Cover of Nuyorican Soul

This latest set turned out interesting.

Once again, I didn’t plan what I would play. Actually I woke up in the middle of the night and couldn’t get back to sleep. So I started messing around. Next thing I know its daylight and I have over five hours of music blended. I listened to the mixes.

I have to say I think I need to wake up in the middle of the night more often! Somehow I get the feeling that the groove of the entire set expresses where I’d rather be versus where I am. It’s more of a driving beat kind of thing with some interesting interludes.

About an hour and a half in you’ll hit Marques Wyatt’s “For Those Who Like To Get Down“. I think you’ll find the blend that flows  into “Love & Happiness” (River Ocean feat. India) and then into Sumo’s “Santiago Boys” off of the Bargrooves Cosmopolitan compilation very interesting. Keep an ear on the keyboards is all I’m saying. There are other triple mixes in the set too.

You will also hear Brother Jack McDuff and cuts by Angelique Kidjo, Miguel Migs, Cameo, US Collective, Jon Cutler, Limelife, Kim English, Jay Tripwire, Kludo, Angela Johnson, George Kranz (Din Daa Daa…remember that?), Ethnic Heritage Ensemble, Ike “Black Liquid” Ngwaba, Fredrik Stark, Lisa Shaw, Kenny Dope and Chuck Diesel to name just a few.

Now I suspect a few of you might not know who some of these artists are. That’s cool. I didn’t either until I listened.

Stay You & Enjoy the Music! Gotta go!

Okay I lied…kinda….

Yesterday I mentioned in a post that I would be adding 100 tracks for today. I was off by a little..its like 204.

The first set started at 1pm Eastern (US) and was prompted by me staring at my 3 basses thinking “I really need to play more”. I started thinking of the songs I used to play and that’s how I wound up with 200+ songs!

These sets add up to 25 hours of music. A little of this and that. From Afrobeat to Fusion with a liberal sprinklin of House all over. There’s R&B classics, Fusion favorites, some indie cuts and of course plenty of remixes in there. (Hurry! tune in NOW!)

The list of artists reads like a Who’s Who in the recording world. I have also included a cut where Stanley Clarke and Stuart Copeland (The Police) joined up. That’s part of a set where I feature songs with great bass lines. Some well known and some maybe not so well known. There is a rare Passport cut off of the Infinity Machine LP in there as well as classic Lil Louis and more.

Tune in, Turn it up and go do something fun (or let the groove help you get through the day).

I hope you enjoy it!

P.S.: That picture over there of the bass is not one of my basses. Mine are nicer looking! Hmmm maybe I’ll post a shot of them sometime….

Oh yeah one more thing. I’m trying to figure out what some of your are using to hear the music. Do me a HUGE favor and drop me a note. I want to see who listens at work or home or where ever and what are you using to tune in with (cell phone, Ipad, laptop, PC) . Thanks in advance, I really appreciate your help!

How I Feel…

Sometimes we listen to certain songs because we want to hear things that reflect how we’re doing at the moment.

This set is not that. It’s about going back and forward. It’s been coming for a minute. I’m going back. “To Mah Roots” so to speak. I heard a song on the radio and thought about how I really liked it and then wondered why I have not played it and others in quite a while.  The playlist is about where I am at and where I am going in these times. No great philisophical statement here. Just what I am hearing in my head and seeing with my eyes. A very eclectic set. Very rhythmic. Weather Report, Marvin Gaye, Funkdadelic, J-Boogie, Funk, Rap, Jazz, Ballads all kinds of music is packed into this set. Some lyrics may apply but don’t assume the obvious. You will hear music from across genres maybe you will wonder how come your local stations don’t play these kinds of songs more often if at all too!  Simple as that.

Enjoy.

Another Goodbye…

by on Aug.14, 2010, under The Musings

Even though its inevitable…

Still seems unacceptable.

Abbey Lincoln has passed on today in New York. She turned 80 barely a week ago. It’s reported that she was in failing health and was in a nursing home. Many will say that Jazz lost a legend. I think its bigger than that. We lost a root. But she planted seeds along the way and there have been blooms. Just as there should be.

Singer, Songwriter, Actress (Nothing But A Man, Mo’ Better Blues)and Activist.

Ms. Lincoln worked with the greats of Jazz including Sonny RollinsEric DolphyColeman HawkinsJackie McLeanClark TerryStanley TurrentineWynton KellyCedar WaltonJoe LovanoPat MethenyRon CarterMiles Davis. Her discography extends from the mid 1950s into 2007.

WBPM NetRADIO extends our deepest condolences to the family, friends, fans and all of those who’ve had the fortune to have been touched by her voice.

Thank You Ms. Lincoln

Peace…

Everyone wants some…

More.

Me too! Shoot I remember when I was a kid the bag was never big enough and I would try to stretch the supply by only eating a few M&M’s…..still wanted more.

Chocolate cake…I wanted all of it. Fried Fish..loved it give me MORE!! Grape Kool-Aid? I wanted gallons. Ribs? Don’t even go there….I’m thinking side of Cow.

While I was listening to the station today I workied on another site adding of all things…

More.

More video, more audio files…even more ways to sell …more.

And I got to thinking…I could use more…

So I added more music to the server. 15 hours

More in fact.

Also added a new preview player…see that blue thing on the right hand side of the page?

If you don’t hear the music playing drag the volume thingy…you will hear (what else)

More.

By the way…

More of you are listening than ever before (thanks so much!!)

…And guess what? I want…

More!!!!

That really helps WBPM NetRADIO stay on the air. So tell anyone with two ears and a brain. Tell them what you heard that took you back or moved you or simply felt good. Tell them how unexpected the mixes can be. Like that time that Rick James cut popped up in the middle of “Body” or that version of Papa Was A Rolling Stone by the Temptations played and how you realized you never heard it like that before. Or, it seems you never really know when that last song came on…like it just was just…on!! Tell them how it seems you hear more voices and instruments on the songs unlike when you heard it on the radio or your iPod (yuck!). Show your eclectic nature by citing thw wide variety of genres you listen to on this station. Or better yet buy a t-shirt from the store (that was supposed to close but I got talked out of doing that…this time). It wouldn’t hurt to sell…

MORE!!

What would really help would be…

More Donations… I ain’t gonna lie…electricity ain’t cheap HAHAHA!!!

More Subscribers (heheheh you shoulda known that was coming right?). I see you out there! You might as well take the plunge. Become a subscriber and guess what? LESS interruptions!! Subscribers get a NON-STOP stream of music.

Hey do me a favor, help a dude out… check out JSO and tell me what you think? Been workin’ hard for the money!

Oh did I remember to mention there’s a new set up today?

On a slightly more serious note..

Fellow humans..

We need to think MORE & stop letting talking heads convince us to act against our own interests. End of Editorial!

Later!

Hi peeps!

Greeting ect., ect., just a quick note…

Added two new sets…
Playing now on the station.
Stuff like Knee Deep, a cut by Man Parrish, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5, A version of Janet jackson’s “Nasty” that rarely if ever gets airplay, “Son of Reach For It” (How many of you “vintage appreciators” remember that cut) and many others.
That set is over 4 hrs long.

Also added a 6hr set of … well you’ll just have to listen to find out!
(trust me..its a good one!!)

That’s 10hrs of non-stop music for those of you have have signed up as VIP Members of the station.
Don’t forget to check out the links at the bottom of the page. Something REAL TASTY for you coffee lovers awaits you.

I know there are a number of you who follow “current events”. Seems sometimes like all hell is breaking loose. Makes me wanna both holla and chill.  All I can say is… “Don’t let ’em change you” (that’s one of the oldies playing too!!)

Remember … this tech is supposed to foster interaction so DROP ME A NOTE! LET ME KNOW WHAT’S UP ON YOUR END!

Peace,

DJ

C-c-c-c-c-changes (Pt. 2)

by on Jun.20, 2010, under Station Update, The Musings, The Other Stuff

Earth
Image by Satoru Kikuchi via Flickr

It’s been a real busy kind of month so far. Here’s where things stand as of now.

Seems some automaton in the Live365 infrastructure took the money needed to renew the package I had before I could stop them. I was hoping to get a different package that was less costly. Naturally when it happened I felt a “sting”. Well, I got busy trying to make up the loss. Not quite there yet. But here’s the plan. I am still working to move to a new package. In preparation for the change, new playlists are being uploaded (right now actually). The old playlists were 64K MP3PRO formatted files. The files being uploaded right now are 96K Mp3PRO files. What’s the difference? Basically better sound quality (Imagine that …right?).

New tracks are also in the pipeline. They are liable to turn up here very soon. So keep listening.

Thanks to new listeners in (in no particular order!):

Houston & Luftkin, Texas; Phoenix, Arizona; Anaheim, South Gate, Beverly Hills & Glendale, California; Alamoosa, Colorado; Edmund, Oklahoma; Evansville, Indiana; Bloomington & Chicago Illinois; Pittsburgh & Philadelphia PA.; Atlanta, Marietta & Lawrenceville, Georgia; Rock Hill SC; Charlotte; Washington,DC; S. Plainfield, NJ; New York City (Hi You Guys!); Albany, New Hartford & White Plains, NY; Brocton, Mass; Oromocto, Canada; Cusco, Peru; La Paz, Bolivia; Bogota & Cucuta, Columbia; Cancun Mexico (I could really use a trip there about now..how about you?); Basildon & London UK; Hoorn, Netherlands; Prague; Zurich, Vienna, Madrid, Ljubljana & Radovljica, Slovenia; Budapest; Warsaw & Rzeszow, Poland; Klaipeda, Lithuania; Moscow; Istanbul; Athens; Bangalore; Bangkok; Cebu City, Phillipines, Perth, AU and last but in no way least Sapporo Japan.

I am deeply thankful to all of you for listening. Please listen often…now…

GO BUY A T-SHIRT (or something) Here !!!

Your Vote Counts!!

I was digging through the Live365 newsletter and this gem popped up:

“Your Vote Counts
Nominate your favorite stations!

Nominate some feature-worthy stations you think deserves some time in the spotlight. Email liveeditor@live365.com with your top 3 stations.

Top nominees will be listed in next month’s newsletter”

And then the sound of rusty gears started turning….(painful I tellya…). I figured, I would let you know and if you were so kind you could drop a line to the editor ( liveeditor@live365.com )of the newletter letting them know how you love the music and how it flows non-stop and is soooo very office friendly and how even your dog wags its tail to the beat and how the neighbors love you since now you blast WBPM NetRADIO while you work out and how the world seems better when you play WBPM NetRADIO and it creates the perfect ambience to chill out to and how birds have stopped poopin on your car roof since you’ve started listening.

That last paragraph was subtle right? 😉

The Saturday Night Set

by on Apr.04, 2010, under The Music

I’ve been meaning to do this for ages….

I just hated all the typing involved..okay I can be lazy…I have to admit, I suck at typin’ so this typing up a list of (have to be over) 100 songs is an act of pure dedication to the cause….

(Feelin sympathetic yet?)

Here’s a partial listing of the set that is playing now … The entire set is 14hrs of non-stop mixe. What’s the big fuss about the songs? pay attention to what happens between them. That is my favorite part. that other place in time that passes while one song ends and the next begins.  This is where I do most of my work. I specialize in transitions to some degree. I look to make the songs – no matter how disparate- sound as if they belong together. As though they were recorded to be played in that order … Listen for a while..you will, I suspect, note the eclectic nature of the set? No?
